Thanks for posting the pic of the old quad. I used to like passing through there.
Also, I have been in a car that drove through the new quad a couple of times back in the early 1980’s before the barricades went up.

anybody who has been to a game at TS should at least have heard of the quad.
Heck it is front and center on the commercial that plays for LSU during football games.

Area with black athletes, smokers, hipsters laying in hammocks, and other students laying in the grass all in separate spots.

In 1958, the ambience of the original Quad was destroyed when the plopped Middleton Library down in the middle of it. So what most of us under the age of 80 know as the Quad is only a fraction of what it once was. But Middleton will be coming down within the next 10 years (we hope) and returning the original Quad to all its glory.

Troy Middleton's stated rationale for destroying the aesthetic there was so fricking stupid, as well. Could have easily expanded the original Hill Library, or built it where the Union or Lockett Hall is. It's criminal anyone let him plop that monstrosity smack in the middle of the original cruciform.

What I remember most about the quad is that all the black people seemed to hang out in the middle of it near the benches.

It's a trashier version of the diag.

The quad is a term used at many colleges for certain areas where 4 buildings come together or as said a large open area where students hang out. As already referenced in Old School, Auburn has one, and I've heard the term used many places.

It was the 1950s. "Urban Renewal" or whatever you call it, was all the rage in cities and what have you. Anything NOT new, boxy, Bauhaus, "mid-century modern" was "OLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD" (sounds familiar, no?) Anything to "update" the old was preferred even if it meant the destruction of buildings we now lament or recognize for historical or architectural significance. Or, in this case, plopping down a brick box of a building in the middle of an ensemble of buildings.
