It's a type of video tape recording format. Developed by Ampex in the 50's it was a revolutionary invention as it was the first practical videotape format. Ray Dolby was on the team.
Each frame was broken up into 4 segments so there was no still picture pause until someone decided to add a digital memory buffer. Not sure how often that was done.
Here's a reel of tape.
All in the Family is an example of a show shot, edited and played back on quad video tape.

Just got home from work. And no, wasnt trolling. And no, haven't been to LsU campus. Watch games in KY and Tn when Lsu plays up north.

Yeah short for quadrangle and it got used on this board a lot when someone would post a pic of a beautiful girl, and some guy said he had seen prettier girls walking through the quad. Then like tree fiddy, pics?, pics or it didn’t happen, Germans, etc it took off. Hyper repetition is funny to us.

I always thought it was a fairly generic term for the middle of a college campus.
ETA, Although we didn't even make the top 50 Most Beautiful.
