ep. Can get a soccer mom lease return for a decent price. Or at least you used to be able to.
Man I just looked and I'm shocked at the GX options in the 2015 range that have sub-70k miles and are slightly over $30k.
Figured they'd be more

Are Kia’s and Hyundais really considered the most reliable?
They're considered the best in the market and have a serious premium on top of MSRP.

They’ve actually gone up but still a good deal. I got my 18 with 20k miles on it for $32 in July of 21. I couldn’t pass that up. I think most people don’t realize it’s basically a 4Runner with a V8 (technically it’s a Prado) They just assume it’s a soccer mom mobile and not a legit off-road midsize.

Pretty much any model year Lexus Rx

Unfortunately, your best answer is Toyota. But I've heard good things about Kia lately. I would check out their hybrid model midsize if I was in the market. I don't know if I would find that in the used market though.

The big question.
4runner or truck
4runner or truck

When I was looking, cost difference was $5k, but for that you got:
-4WD (most Louisiana 4Runners are 2WD)
-V8 (but roughly the same gas mileage)
-longer warranty on Lexus vs Toyota
As previous poster said, the GX is sold as the Land Cruiser Prado internationally, the Land Cruiser’s little brother.
Leather was actually better in the 4Runner limited.

My MIL still drives my 2006 Grand Cherokee- not very often, but I put 160,000 trouble free miles on it
I too had a 2006 GC that was trouble-free.. i now have a 2012 that has been mostly trouble-free, with the exception of a couple of recalls and one or two minor things, so minor that i cant remember what they were, and they were covered under warranty .. the nice thing about the 2012 i have is that it looks almost exactly the same as a 2021 Grand Cherokee (they only finally redesigned it for 2022), at a fraction of the cost.. drives like a dream, i got the ‘Laredo X’ package so it has leather seats, panoramic sunroof, backup camera etcera .. and i average about 24 mpg on the highway which isnt bad for an SUV.. Highly recommend .

4runner the most reliable but it really is a dinosaur. I don't mind it but it's not for everyone.
The Rav4 and CRV are reliable choices, but I'd go with Rav4 for ultimate reliability.
I've had spectacular results from a recent Mazda (2016) and the CX5 is very well received.
Avoid Nissan. And just about everything else.

Whatever Toyota or Honda makes period, accept no substitute.

Love my 2012 Toyota Highlander Limited. Great gas mileage and V6 engine purrs like a kitten. Great trunk space - especially when 3rd down seats are down. Lost my 1st one when Harvey flooded my house and found a replacement within a week. Only problems have been the damn door actuators - surprised there has not been a lawsuit again Toyota...

IDK, but I finally found a SUV that I actually like. Infinity's QX60.
If I were forced to get a SUV that would be the one I would get.

We own a 2019 Santa Fe Sport. I really enjoy it.
IMO it’s a value proposition. We paid 20k for a mid trim model intended as a commuter car. No issues and it will be paid off after a 36mo note. Vehicles are depreciating assets. No need to have these prestige models that cost you thousands just to keep up with the Jones

Acura MDX is hard to beat, assuming you can find a used one.

We have a 2018 GMC Acadia Denali and it's a dream. Reasonably available and well priced too.

Don't buy any Kia or Hyundai with the 2.4L and 2.0L Theta II GDI engines. The engine could lock and seize anywhere from 30,000 miles or above.
Wiki
By April 2017, Hyundai expanded the 2015 recall by including another 572,000 vehicles with Theta II engines, including 2013-2014 Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles.[5] Hyundai told safety regulators the same metal debris problem caused the expanded recall. Near that same time, Kia told NHTSA about a recall of more than 618,000 model year 2011-2014 Kia Optima, 2012-2014 Sorento and 2011-2013 Sportage vehicles because the Theta engine bearings wore out too early and caused the engines to seize.
On December 1, 2020, Hyundai and Kia recalled 423,000 vehicles equipped with various engines following a joint review by Hyundai and the NHTSA, of which the 2.4L Theta II MPI engines were a part of. This marks the first instance of the MPI variants of these engines being recalled. Affected vehicles include the 2011-2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe,[12] 2012-2013 Kia Sorento, 2011-2013 Kia Optima Hybrid, 2012-2013 Kia Forte and Forte Koup, and the 2012 Kia Sportage.

Hyundai Santa Fe Sport AWD from like 2013 would be great if you dont want to pay a premium for all the screens and tech nonsense.

I have a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe and I love it. 80k miles no issues (other than the deer that attacked me recently)
There are so many great details that Hyundai’s has added…this is my first one and I wish I would have discovered them sooner.
