Other than Kia Telluride/Hyundai Palisade (premium on those is way too high).

I was looking at rankings and a lot had the Grand Cherokee listed pretty high. I'm dubious of any Chrysler products b/c of history. Has their long-term quality changed?

How is the quality of Ford Explorers in the 2017-2019 range?

I see good deals all the time on Volkswagen Atlas, but I'm leery of buying any German cars used.

It's getting super hard to do any real research online these days b/c of how advanced SEO has gotten, so that's why I come to the OT.

*ETA: no Toyotas. Not trying to pax that tax on top of the used vehicle tax going on. Also 4Runners are too thirsty.

I have a 2017 Explorer. I have 66k miles on it and I haven’t had to do anything other than oil changes and standard upkeep. It’s time for new tires, but other than that I’ve no complaints. It fits everyone and the dogs comfortably.

I’m sure I’ll think differently after our road trip to Wyoming this Christmas

The Grand Cherokee is the most awarded mid-suv on the planet, so may be some validity there. It used to be a relatively simple, unibody crossover, but as gov’t mandates(safety, economy, etc)have increased complexity, so has reliability. I drive one regularly as a company provided vehicle, and am quite familiar with them. Limited to driver, +4 passengers, it lacks flexibility of 3 rows of seats. The newer L version took care of that, but is newer, and less reliability data is available

GX is 100% a bargain if you can deal with the outdated tech

My 2013 must have had at least six recall fixes. But, at least those were covered. It was pretty reliable overall besides needing some sway bars or something and finally crapped out around 100k. It is wild how my 2021 feels like exactly the same car, but with better electronic tech.

My MIL still drives my 2006 Grand Cherokee- not very often, but I put 160,000 trouble free miles on it before I gave it to her in 2014. If she would admit that she’s never going to drive again, I’d likely look hard at keeping it for my 14 year old to learn to drive in. I had no problems with it at all, and the only problems she’s had have been self inflicted because it’s not driven enough.

If they had come out with the Grand Cherokee L a year earlier, I would have pushed for that instead of the Atlas I got my wife.

Yep. Can get a soccer mom lease return for a decent price. Or at least you used to be able to.

I have a 2020 Explorer that I leased for my job. I have a year left and then I’m gonna buy it. I love it.

There was some bad press about the 2019-20 models, but I haven’t seen it. I love it. Favorite car I have had overall. About to drive it to Big Bend.

I would only consider Toyota, Honda, Mazda.
But is I had to go outside right now the Ford Edge is likely their most reliable and highest customer satisfactions out there.

I'd start with Honda and Toyota.

My last two vehicles were a 4Runner, traded in after I was hit from behind, I put 60K miles on it, no issues at all. I then bought a Grand Cherokee, 88 K miles later, no issues at all. Just routine maintenance on both, nothing major at all. Would recommend both.

Are Kia’s and Hyundais really considered the most reliable?
