What he said. When he pisses away all his nest egg and is about to be tossed to the curb for non-payment of rent/house note, lost the respect of his friends and family,etc., then he's likely hit rock bottom.
Then it can go one of 2 ways, get help or get dead on the street somewhere living the homeless life.

you can be a heavy alcoholic for a LONG time if you have money to support yourself
my dad was an alcoholic but sobered up for the last 20-ish years of his life. however, he lived around recovering alcoholics in public housing just prior to his death. most people on this forum have no idea what "rock bottom" is like or even what "recovering from rock bottom while sober, living in public housing" is like.

Alcoholism is a disease and its f***ed up. But your buddy has to realize he's in a bad place and seek his own help or the help given will never sink in.
I've seen alcoholism seriously affect family members and a girlfriend (no pics) I would've married if not for being a total drunk. It will mess people up and their loved ones for years.
Don't get me wrong, I love my bourbon, not telling yall not to drink. But I've seem some smart and attractive people with plenty of advantages get taken down and have a middling to crummy life from alcoholism.

When you got to grandmas house and everything of value is gone and the only reason it’s not like that at mom and dads is because dad took him by the neck a few months ago.

Minimum wage got my adrenaline caged

That's got my arse hyper
I pray that God answers, maybe I'll ask nicer
Watching ballers while they flossing in their pathfinders
These overnight stars becoming autograph signers
We'll all gone blow up and leave the past behind us
Along with the small fry's and average half pinters
While playa haters turn bitch like they have vaginas
'Cause we see them dollar signs and let the cash blind us
Money will brainwash you and leave your arse mindless

Rock bottom is simple to define: it’s major depression.
You can lose everything but if you retain a positive and hopeful outlook you can piece your life back together.
If you suffer from major depression you have no ability to imagine a better tomorrow. When you are in constant mental pain and have no hope for healing, that is rock bottom.
As William Styron said: If you gave me the choice of having major depression or amputating my arm off without an anesthetic, I’d always pick the latter.

Depression has this nasty habit of making you think you’ve hit rock bottom before dragging you further down than you imagined possible.
