Sure it's a combination of things.

I would guess that a lot of people who usually carry change around with them and try to spend it don't want to handle it right now.

So, they just dump it into a jar when they get home but don't take any back out with them.

A lot of people do that anyway but I am sure there are a ton of people just doing it now due to Covid.

Mints slowed down or stopped production because of Covid. Back up and running now.

Retail deposits slowed almost stopped for months. Retail opened back up and requested coin but hadn’t deposited what they had. Mint couldn’t keep up.

And then people started hording coins because of the above mentioned shortage.

The government wants to implement a digital dollar and they want to get rid of cash/coins.

My barn is full of toilet paper, rolled nickels, and 9 mm ammo.

round prices to the nearest 0.05 cent

Yes. Elect me and I will put this into place. Penny production will be halted and every cent would be ironclad earmarked to pay towards the National debt. It is a good idea.

Fed says there are an average of 14 trillion transactions per day. Say you only averaged $0.01 per by rounding up to nearest $0.05. You could pay off the debt in a year or two, then start using it to fund the government. No more income tax and you wouldn’t even feel it.

Be stupid not to do it.

Yes retail hoarding is real. When the news hit that sector started ordering like Karen’s buying toilet paper. They are still doing it.

Two other factors.

Stores don’t want employees touching coins because somehow they think that all coin they get is somehow “new” so they didn’t deposit and ordered

Casinos around the country are opening back up and ordering huge amounts of coin placing more demand on the cycle.

Why don’t we just do away with pennies and round prices to the nearest 0.05 cent.

Can we skip ahead to rounding to the nearest $0.50? What use does anyone have for nickels or dimes besides babies who want to shove something up their nose or poors and their scratchy-lottos?

Certain people in certain parts of the world use flat stones as a substitute for toilet paper. I imagine coins could serve similarly.

Neither can you apparently. Rounding to the nearest 0.05 of a cent (5/100s of a cent) as you suggest wouldn’t solve anything.

My personal experience is that the local banks that have coin counting machines have them out of order at this time for infection control. I have been trying with no luck to cash out about $200 in coins for 3 months.

washing and sterilizing all coins returned to banks takes time, stores run by karens are not reusing coins, they are bringing them to banks to exchange for "clean" coins that are most likely contaminated with more diseases then the ones they turn in

A friend actually brought this up last week. He said he and s lot of people he knows are hoarding coin because paper money will soon be worthless.

Didn’t know what to tell him

I feel that the underused coin pouch has been ignored for way too long.
