quote:I agree with this. Baton Rouge isn’t bad when it comes to entertainment and restaurants and whatnot for a city of its size. It’s the planning, infrastructure, general layout of the city, and crime that makes it not so great
I wouldn’t say BR is lacking much. Just shitty foresight with roads built in the past and a certain part of the population that likes to commit crime and loiter bring down the reputation.

I live in BFE because I can and I generally hate living near too many humans.
But if I had to return to civilization, I'd go to the polar opposite and live in a highly walkable and bikeable community. Had to live in big cities a few times early in my career, and while they have challenges, being able to just walk around and get some air is a major quality of life improvement. Also handy for walking home drunk on date night.
The burbs are the last place I'd live again. Especially the BR burbs, little islands cut off from every damn thing except sprawling suburban hell. In BR's case, I doubt this is fixable at this point.
To each his own, i guess.

We had 2 tigers in our city we had Omar and Mike
LSU owns Mike and Omar was a ringer brought in from out of town. Technically Baton Rouge is without a tiger of its own.

Another bridge over a large strip of water to the west.

That’s a great section of New Orleans. That vibe is what we need here in more places. The overpass area is about the closest we come. Government street is continuing to develop.

City never made a serious attempt to attract good businesses, which means high quality jobs for the highly educated, which means good demographics.
The corrupt leadership was always content to rule over a dirty, poor, dysfunctional city full of trash.

You are comparing BR to other cities in general? Baton Rouge has what people will support. I am not sure if there is anything that can come to BR, that isn't here and be successful. Its a capital city with a flagship university that is also a casino city. You move the capital and LSU and it would be another run down small city.

Greenville, SC has all the ugly areas that BR does. The poorly laid out streets, no streetscapes, long blighted roads with payday loan shops, hub cap cities, liquor stores, pawn shops, Long John Silvers, way too many Dollar Generals etc.
But it has the Swamp Rabbit Trail and an awesome downtown. And some cool small towns that are like burbs but have downtowns and trail systems etc. And an awesome state park right outside town.
Growing up in South BR (now St. George) I always wondered why there was no safe way to walk or bike anywhere outside of suburban subdivisions.

We have the highest sales tax(state + local) = 10.11% and what do we get?
Good schools? No
Good roads? No
Safe community? No
Good insurance rates? No
So what are we paying for exactly? Honestly, we need to take a page out of Mississippi’s playbook and revamp our schools and limit how much these ambulance chaser lawyers can sue for so we can get car insurance rates 1/3 of what we pay, that’s what Mississippi did.
Also, need to pass something that encourages married families who have kids. Give bigger tax breaks to married families with kids and house because that’s the kind of people you want to keep in your state. Not saying single parents shouldn’t get help, but you need to keep the right people incentivized to STAY.

Walkable areas for entertainment/nightlife/dining. Ideally, an actual "downtown" area for that. At one point, it seemed like that was underway, but everything went dormant.
There's so much potential, considering you have a riverfront area... but everything is so spread out and disjointed.
