re: What exactly is Church of the Highlands?

Hodges claims to never, ever ask anyone for any money....but brings in the disingenuous Robert Morris to preach a special message on tithing.
This past first Wednesday's service was nauseating. Guy gets up there and talks about generosity and how generous he is because he gave a free book to someone. Talks about how people who are generous will see it given back to them. Then has the audacity to claim he isn't preaching prosperity gospel and tells an anecdote regarding some letter he sent to a scamming preacher.
Everyone laughs. Blows my mind how blind people are to this.

Is that a bad thing?
In some cases it is. I have several coworkers that attend the one on Grantsmill. They can't have a conversation without it relating to something they are doing in church. It feels very cultish.

You also never, ever hear them talk about sister churches unless they are ARC churches.
I remember growing up, pastors at other churches would regularly talk about other congregations and things they were doing in the world- sometimes even of different denominations.
I never hear that at Highlands. I only ever hear them talk about how great highlands is and how highlands has the best, most generous members ever.
They don't want you to go to church. They want you to go to Highlands.

Why are you even in this thread?

This is all too much to read but I can probably summarize it -
Posters that hate churches but aren’t familiar with it are going to say negative things and call it a cult. Will compare them to crooked televangelist
Posters that have reluctantly gone to a service there with the mindset of finding negative aspects will give their personal experiences telling how everyone was a hypocrite.
Posters that are holier than thou will point out insignificant differences in their scriptural interpretations of how Christianity should be presented and declare the church a bunch of heretics.
I don’t live in Alabama, but have visited the church several times while there. I found the pastor a great speaker and theological beliefs very solid. Before attending I reviewed their theological beliefs on their website and found them to be consistent with most mainstream Protestant churches. His sermons are more on an introductory level rather than deep theological presentations. However, the message is come as you are and represent Christ’s love through service while growing in knowledge of the Bible. It seemed to me that 90% of the people there did not contribute to the offering taken and there was no push to.
This thread would be a lot quicker to go through if everyone just posted a number to represent their true feelings versus the verbose preconceived opinions. Just use this -
1 - I have never heard of them, but hate churches in general so would have said something negative regardless. I’m just here to complain.
2 - I went once, but hate churches so would have said something negative
3 - I’m an expert in theology and don’t go to church there, but am arrogant and jealous so would have made a negative comment
4 - I think the church does great work and would say something positive

Chris Hodges is a brilliant man who loves the Lord and preaches the truth.
If his Twitter activity is any indication, he's also a borderline bigot.

Highlands, like all churches has good and bad stuff.
I don't particularly like their worship style, and have some theological differences, so it wouldn't be for me.
However, they do small group ministry really well. And a lot of their mission work looks very community oriented.
ETA: I will say they seem very focused on the pastor though. I have visited once and saw more pictures of Hodges than I did crosses. Not my style

Into nepotism too. But not transparency.
I wonder what the lead preacher is worth? I bet it's a lot. Google says 900k but that's laughably low.
The Lort always leads these preachers to bigger churches, not smaller ones. And Hodges has cracked the code--he's got it all to himself!

arc. Highlands gives money to help start those churches but does not receive anything in return.
The Arc model is based off a Harvard franchising business model where the franchised church has to pay back the "owning" church a certain percent over time while fulfilling their buyback obligations (church in Beckly, West Virginia is doing this under the Church international- formally church of st amant - right now)
They can remained tied together financially or the sub church can buy their way out and have their own autonomy (this is what the church in st amant did when it freed it itself from healing place)
Arc = McDonald churches
It works but don't pretend money's got nothing to do with it
