This is not correct. The church has grown and instead of building bigger buildings they have chosen to start portable campuses where existing attendees already live. Eventually they build permanent buildings without using debt. They have never done a fundraiser or building campaign and never put any pressure to give. They use the model of Highlands to help other pastors start churches through a ministry called arc. Highlands gives money to help start those churches but does not receive anything in return.

Highlands is a term that is used a lot in this area because of all the hills and mountains. Its a play on that word meaning a church that wants to help you reach new heights (heaven) and live a better life with Jesus at the center.

Highlands provides church services and resources to 20 prisons in the state of Alabama and funds several ministries that provide food, clothing and healthcare (among other things) to those in need. Just because something has grown doesn’t make it bad. It could be because they enjoy being a part of something that they enjoy and is helping others.

You have obviously never been to church there or listened to a message. Why bash something in ignorance that is helping so many people. Sad.

The college is in an official accreditation process (takes years to complete) and in the meantime offers college credits through another university they are partnering with. The college is also in the process of creating an endowment that will allow students to attend for free while getting a four year degree. The church makes no money off of the university. It actually gives money to it.

Oh, how wonderful! Friend of mine wanted to be a part of that ministry because of his prior legal problems. They told him he couldn’t and all but ostracized him. He does it through another church now.

They’re all about image. It’s why they make special shirts and post pics all over social media when they have their serve days. It’s very off putting.

Not that I know or disagree with you, but that statement is meaningless. It can mean a thousand different things.

What I mean is this: One of the common criticisms of Highlands is that the pastor “doesn’t even preach out of the Bible”. That’s not true. Chris Hodges is not Joel Osteen “feel good prosperity gospel”. You hear this a lot in my area from people who are threatened by them and spread this among their congregations.
They are not for everyone, but they aren’t bad either. It’s a good church trying to do Gods work and spread the gospel.

They are the modern embodiment of the Pharisees praying in the town square where everyone can see.

It’s a cult. MFers are backing up 459 near their mega church on Grantsmill every Sunday. Everyone I’ve ever met that attends there let’s you know they attend there.

It's a mega church that preaches the prosperity gospel, has one preacher via CCTV, and is sort of cult-like. People like the lax responsibility afforded by being lost in a crowd.

Wow! Do y'all have a bot or something that alerts you to any mention of the cult and sends a digital Sir Lancelot into action?

Is that a bad thing?

I can understand people thinking they are a country club type church but from what I see from a very limited outside perspective is they do great community outreach. Isn't that what a church should be doing?

For me, it is. I don’t care where you got to church. If I wanted to know, I’d ask.

I've never attended but have checked out many of Hodge's sermons online. He most definitely is not the Joel Osteen prosperity type and is heavy on scripture reference.

If you miss the nuance you might think it is prosperity gospel, but he is very clear...God wants you to use anything that he blesses you with to bless others and not yourself.

Out of curiosity, what is the church leadership structure like? Are there elders who are equal to Pastor Chris and can hold him accountable for any sin? Does Pastor Chris have the final say over any major decisions at the church?
