re: What does the OT think of Atlanta?

From someone who lived in New Orleans, Houston and Atlanta, Atlanta is my favorite by far.
Spring and Fall are gorgeous.
It is the most forested large city in Americas (read this in a magazine article)
It's growth is not bound geographically by a river, mountain range, etc, so
you have really good suburbs for each compass direction.
Families with above average means still send their kids to public schools,
especially in the northern suburbs, due to the quality of the schools.
it's one hour away from the start of the Appalachian Trail.

Went up there Saturday to watch the Kentucky Derby. I enjoyed it.

Never underestimate liberal white guilt.

I grew up in Gwinnett County first 12 years of my life in the 80's and 90's and its unrecognizable now. Its sad really was an awesome place once upon a time.
I grew up in Gwinnett as well around the same time and it was amazing. I would never live there now. My folks finally moved away about a year ago. Surprised it took them as long as it did.
I’ve lived in the Atlanta area almost my whole life. Moved away for college and my first job. Never thought I would move back but I’m glad I did. I love it for better or worse. Sometimes I do think about moving because of the politics and transplants but this is my city damnit

We lived in Woodstock then Canton. I commuted to Perimeter Center and afternoon commutes took me north through Alpharetta. In 2004, it was really nice, but last time we passed through, development had blown up.
The traffic in ATL is horrendous by large city standards as well. Houston and TxDOT are far better at managing large populations.

Took my wife and daughter to the aquarium a couple of weeks ago. Traffic is god awful. I can’t understand why anyone would want to live there.
I took my son there also a couple weeks ago. We went to Atlanta for a few days for his spring break. We did the aquarium, Coke museum, Legoland Discovery, and a Braves game. Ate at the Varsity also while downtown. Traffic sucks big time but we enjoyed our trip.

Like anyplace it depends on where you live. You couldn't pay me to live in the Atlanta suburbs in 2025.
What what’s wrong with the suburbs north of Atlanta? I haven’t been on a while but I remember them as being very nice.

Demographics and traffic Canton is nice but its way up there. Might as well just move to Jasper, Ellijay, or Blue Ridge at that point. Gwinnett is a disaster. Cobb is 10 years behind Gwinnett. Meanwhile my intown neighborhood is like Mayberry basically.

quote:Moved here last summer for family reasons. Opted away from Buckhead d/t traffic and talk of rising crime. Ended up in a nice area just north. Hills, old growth trees, winding roads, river walk, parks. Most convenient location to shops, everyday dining, entertainment, etc we've ever lived. Very safe. Great schools. Traffic north of I-285 is palpably lighter than Charleston/Charlotte metros, at least that's been our experience. I-285 and Atl arteries south of it can get crazy though, esp around RHs.

I understand the sentiment about not living way out, but I also wouldn't live in town anymore either unless it was one of a handful of specific Buckhead neighborhoods.
But even then, it's really hard to go back to incompetent city services, thuggery within a stone's throw and handwringing lib neighbors once you've left it.

I'm in East Cobb a lot. I think the parts of Vinings, East Cobb, SS and Roswell closest to the river, especially the older established neighborhoods in each, are probably the best all around places to live in the Atlanta metro.

There are a lot of fantastic restaurants, lot of sporting events and concerts, and some great places to live if you go up North. The job scene in Atlanta is plentiful and varied, allowing just about anyone to find a good job in their field (finance, tech, consulting, and accounting are massive industries in ATL).
Traffic sucks, especially around downtown. I've only ever encountered worse traffic in Raleigh, NC heading toward the Research Triangle. It's a very expensive place to live in terms of rent, housing prices, etc., and young homebuyers are having a tough time moving out of apartments into houses because of an inflated housing market.

I enjoyed it for the 3 years i lived there 92-95. I worked in galleria and lived close to there so traffic did not impact me. Braves were all time great then. would park at art center and ride Marta to old Fulton county stadium. Easy in and out with bus and train. Lots of georgia peaches out in Buckhead. Sunday afternoons at Good ol days on Roswell Road, many times Chipper Jones and Klesko would be in there hammering drinks. Weekends would ride up to Dahlonega and further up to AT to hike and camp. Made many UGA games and Tech games. It was a blast early 20's. First place I had been where they did the beer garden concept with everyone outside with drinks watching braves games. Have not been back but maybe five times since I moved for work but undeniably a fantastic first place to live and work after college. It was a young persons city back then.

We went to Buckhead after the semifinal and I was pretty disappointed by it. Very trashy. We probably just went to the wrong places though

I have lived here for over 25 years. Inside the perimeter for all. My wife was born and raised ITP. It is passable and I cannot wait to move once my son gets done with school. The very worst part of Atlanta is the hour you have to add onto every single road trip. Mileage says five hours, add one to get out of the city. Coming home and making good time, add an hour onto that. The airport is fantastic if you know what you are doing. Once you realize there is no difference between North and South it makes everything at the airport easier.

quote:We just assumed Buckhead would be "it". Went through several lovely places there. But traffic in the surrounds was just too heavy to pull the trigger, and there does seem to be a higher crime issue now than in the past. So we took a look up here and voila. Didn't fully appreciate how accessible everything was until after the fact.

Traffic cand be bad but it isn't worse than any major city. We've lived in Cobb for 18 years. We have Fox tickets, and we go midtwon/buckhead/downtown 3-4 times a month. If you hit the Peach Pass, it takes 25 minutes to get down there. If the interstate is jammed up, just take Atlanta Road down there and cut over.
Need to go to Perimeter? Take Lower Roswell if you want to avoid the interstate. There are multiple ways to get around the city and never have to get on the interstate.
The restaurant scene on Howell Mill has become legit. We went to Mujo a couple of weeks ago, and the Omakase experience was amazing. West Side Provisions has a ton of restaurants, and you still have solid offerings like The Optimist and Miller Union.
You can head down to Ponce and hop on the beltine, got to Krog, basically Atlanta has a ton of stuff, and navigating around is not bad. It is way overblown by people passing through. The connector is always jammed whether its 3 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning.
