What do you like most and least about where you currently live?

And if you could start over in a brand new area, what would it be?
I've been thinking a lot about this. We all shite on Louisiana and for many good reasons... but I wonder how much is grass greener on the other side?
Is there truly an oasis of pleasure out there, given that you still have to go to work, raise a family, etc.

Like: Not the sticks but not overly congested either. Laid-back, unpretentious populace.
Not like: Not located near any interesting big cities.

Hate the weather.

I live in SW Fla.
Love the fishing and the salt water in general.
Hate that I'm away from most of my family and friends in Louisiana.
I haven't traveled for shite in my life, so I'd have no clue where to even start when it comes to choosing to do it all over again.

Peace and quiet with zero crime…

Michigan UP
Like- Untouched nature, isolation, camping, proximity to numerous outdoor recreation activities. Great demographics
Dislike- not much. If you can’t handle the cold, don’t come here. Biggest drawback is driving to Detroit to fly anywhere

Baton Rouge
like: my friends, my little house, my relatively short commute, several restaurants
hate: the weather 90% of the time, the crime, the traffic anytime I want to leave my little bubble, all the abandoned buildings, graffiti, and garbage everywhere
There are MUCH better places than BR out there. While many of the problems here are also problems everywhere else, a lot of those problems aren't nearly as bad. However, moving somewhere else can be extremely expensive, finding work in a new city that affords you the same or better QOL can be difficult, and replacing your existing social network, especially one formed since birth with deep ties in the community, is almost impossible to do even over several years time.
Many places also have minuses (mostly winter or drought related) that we don't have. It's all about leveraging what you stand to gain verses what you know you will be giving up.
My career is especially NOT mobile, so I'm completely trapped here. Even if I was willing to sacrifice my great friends, roots, and home, I couldn't leave if I wanted to.

Isn’t it closer to fly
Out of Minnesota????

Birmingham suburb.
Like - Both of our families are from here and still live close.
Dislike - It's not the same as it was before coming back. It's losing the small town charm that it once had.

Like: million dollar view. abundant outdoor activities nearby. Close to a bunch of ski resorts. Im as physically fit as Ive ever been living here.
Dislike: Closet grocery store is small, shitty, and 25 minutes away. Friends are all at least that far. Travel can be... challenging at times.
But still pretty much like it. Just looking to move into Summit Co to be closer to work and friends.

It’s over 6 hours to MSP/Chicago/Detroit. You can fly out of Marquette on a small plane and pay more

Katy, TX
Likes: church, HEB, TX BBQ, newly opened Best Stop
Loathes: too much diversity, property taxes, hard water. lack of golf options (spoiled by central FL I guess), encroachment from Houston

I don’t understand how golf can be so important in anyone’s life.

Much greener in Charlotte, NC
Likes:
-Good public schools (if you live in a good area, even inside the city limits)
-4 seasons, long spring/falls, snows only once every other year or so
-2 hrs to mountains/3 hrs to beaches
-international airport, direct flights to most big cities in the US
-traffic is still not too bad (especially when compared to Houston/Dallas/Austin/Atlanta)
Cons
-bad drivers
-lack of festivals/local live music scene
-Panthers suck (but at least I get to see the saints play once a year)
-lack of unique food culture
