Go inside

Travel baseball tourneys used to drive me nuts. I thought they would push their luck w/lightning to ensure they get games in to keep from refunding money.

Seems the lightning detection system was never “working” right (6mile radius detection never happened).

WTF doe this:

What Do You Do When Lightning Is Close & You Are Outside?

Have to do with this:
quote:

just like the vaccine, I don't care if you don't get it. But when there is a rise in cases and the majority of them are in non vaccinated people and then there are places where every has to wear a mask then it affects me so its not the same so don't try to compare it).

Gods Lord.

When I was 12 years old, I was playing in a baseball game at the CYO, which is in downtown BR. Our team hit the ball really well so the team we were playing put their catcher, who caught every game in CF and moved their regular CF to LF. First inning, we're at the plate and former LSU WR Todd Kitchen was on 2B. It starts getting really dark and a loud "boom" happens. The CF and LF both go down. The LF gets up but the CF does not, Struck by lightning with a hole in his hat and one in each legging. Ambulance comes, takes him to the hospital where they bring him back to life and he lives on life support until I believe he was 18 years old. At that point, his parents decided to take him off of life support.

After that, been pretty skittish about lightning.

And here I thought this was going to be a breath of fresh air with no COVID mentions, but here we are...

Grab onto a sexy man with strong arms. Nothing better than a straight man who can make you feel safe.

It's complicated - if a solid structure (commercial, residential or industrial building, not a shed, lean to, tent) or a solid metal top vehicle isn't available, about the ideal location is a dense crop of low trees with taller trees around it, in relatively low ground or even a ditch/valley.

If the ground is particularly low you want to watch for flooding, but otherwise the lower the ground the better.

You want to avoid:

Tall trees, isolated trees of any height, tall open structures, metal structures (billboards, water towers, scaffolds), cliffs, ledges, etc., or flat open ground and the higher the ground, the more dangerous.

Also, crouch low but do not lie flat. If in a group, separate to avoid multiple casualties with a single strike - just like precautions you would take if facing artillery or grenades.

Nothing. I cut the grass in it today. If it is going to strike me it is going to strike me and being under a roof isn't going to stop lightning.

Man if we had this awesome app back in the 60's we could have avoided being struck several times. I'm glad we have it now. I hate getting struck and glad that it can't happen now that I have the app.

You crouch into a ball and get up on the balls of your feet. Make ground contact as minimal as possible.

Correct, and keeping your feet as close together as possible reduces the possibility of a voltage differential between your feet if lighting strikes the ground near by. If your feet were spread apart the voltage gradient across the ground from the strike would cause current to flow up one leg and down the other with unwanted results. This is why a lot of cows and horses are killed by lighting while standing in fields. It is not direct strikes, but nearby ground strikes and the fact their front and rear legs are far apart.

Stay low, away from trees.

When one of my kids were about 10 years old, she asked me this same question. I said, "Well, you gotta be careful, you never know where or when lightning is gonna strike." Her eyes got big and she said, "Just like a frog!!!" (she hated those green frogs around the outside of the house). I said, "what?" She replied, "Well, you never know when or where a frog is going to jump!"

I was fishing once right before a storm and my graphite rod would start humming when I picked it up toward the sky because the air was so charged
