Major companies relocating down there. That CB&I building on Essen ... should be downtown. Lamar ... should be downtown. Companies of those sizes bring entire populations with them capable of supporting a flurry of derivative activity.

This. It's possibly never been better, and it's getting better every day.
And it was a Wednesday night, for Pete's sake. Wednesday. During a work week. It's like walking into Tiger Stadium on a Tuesday morning with no one there, looking up, and saying, man, this is what people call a loud stadium?

I get that. It's moving in the right direction apparently. I was more referring to the areas not currently experiencing the gentrification. But I suppose you have to have a center booming first.
I'm glad it's improving.

I'm honestly glad that it's improving with a lot of private money and businesses investing. I wasn't thrilled with the tax that was trying to be shoved down our throats to revitalize downtown by Kip. I know I'll catch shite for saying that.
I don't spend a ton of time downtown. But the times I've been lately, it was on a Friday or Saturday night. I can tell you, it's completely different than it used to be. Much more activity.
Bottom line, I don't think it's ever going to be the metropolis some want it to be. But it's moving in the right direction.

heck, even the shopping center with the Old Broodmore theater is seeing some improvements. Bar Marche is now Bon Carre and looks great. One of the great old department stores on Main St/Laurel is now the headquarters of a major construction company. Sherwood is reversing and turning back into a decent neighborhood. Southdowns has been completely turned around into a destination neighborhood. New developments are popping up on Florida around the Community College and the General Hospital. There's a water park at Independence Park now. Have you seen the gorgeous new baseball facility in Gardere? Coca Cola opened up a new state of the art bottling plant near the sirport that is the world's first ever LEED certified factory. EA Sports at LSU South. Mid-City merchants are booming with boutique stores and vintage shops. Town Center has brought back upscale shopping inside the city limits. Look at how the Overpass area has improved with Slitz n Giggles, Chelsea's, Frankie's Dog House, Trader Joe's, Petco, Acme, ect having moved in. The north gates of campus have a nice shopping center with restaurants and a CVS instead of the old rundown Tigerland mall. The city has not only turned the corner, it's rounding third and heading home.

Downtown BR has definitely come a long way. It's still not very appealing, but it's moving in the right direction.

Looking forward to having a grocery store within walking distance, but I'm disappointed that the space across from Schlitz is gonna be a Raising Canes. Would have loved to have a nice brew pub or something there.

It's fun to pub crawl downtown on Friday nights.

What can be done to reclaim the area and make it somewhere people want to be?
honestly, it has been tried in a hell of a lot of cities and the only thing that I have ever seen work has been to put a major sports arena smack in the middle of it...something along the lines of coors field in Denver....

Sometimes, but some downtowns with lots of offices clear out at night. You need residents, restaurants, night life, events, etc.
And a grocery store.

Downtown Baton Rouge is awful. Vicksburg, MS has a better downtown.
And it's a shame bc it could have so much potential...

Hey now! I live downtown and I love my quiet Sunday through Wednesday nights, because it's loud as as heck Thursday through Saturday. So don't go trying to find a way to get people downtown the rest of the week!
Seriously though, Monday and Wednesday are the deadest nights night life-wise. Tuesday is alright though because of the Happy's running club. It's packed Friday and Saturday nights. And downtown BR has come a long way in just the few years I've lived here and is only going to get better. The new store, opening in September, will be huge. Oh and downtown is really busy and packed with people during office hours on weekdays. I don't think a lot of people see or realize that. There are more than just bars downtown. And it is actually a really safe place to live compared to most of BR.

I was in downtown Vicksburg just a few months ago. No way that downtown is better than BR. Everything was closed down and out of business. The only restaurant that was actually open was the one by that ship museum. All the casinos were shut down too. It was actually sad because we all thought that area could have a lot of potential. Seemed like a dying town to me.

If you can't have a good time in BR it's your own fault
