Now, if they could just do something about the Section 8 Housing in Tigerland.
How can this feasibly be accomplished?

udtiger What could revitalize downtown BR? AA minor league team w/ downtown stadium. Could use the state parking garages for parking.
I don't think this city would support LSU baseball as well as they do, and a minor league team on top of that too.

For developmental/retail success you need residential housing
Downtown BR does not have any significant housing
And oh, who says all the IBM folks are gonna live downtown ?
That's jus a big BR bull shite plug.
They not gonna live downtown

There's something to be said for a "great fire" type scenario. Disasters have an upside, sometimes.

If anything, other parts of Baton Rouge have been neglected because so much attention has been paid to downtown. It's functional and serves its purpose as a bar scene. One thing that kills the area is the ghetto surrounding it (as far as people moving there).

What could revitalize downtown BR? Matherns and IBM downtown will certainly help. Having those half dozen HUGE projects along the Nicholson corridor south of Downtown is already putting pressure on slum lords in Old South Baton Rouge to sell to the group of wealthy LSU alumni/developers that are buying up every available property in Old South Baton Rouge to gentrify it. Gentrification has already won the momentum in Bouregard Town. The developments are cleaning out Nicholson. In the next decade, the momentum will win out and begin pushing the trash off of Highland. Now, if they could just do something about the Section 8 Housing in Tigerland. The trash is being flanked and surrounded as we speak. From Bouregard in the North, Park Ave and the Lakes in the East, LSU from the South, and now Nicholson in the West. The trash will be gentrified or bulldozed, but it will take time. 10-20 years.
What are the 6 huge projects on the Nicholson corridor other than the water campus and street car?

You are correct. What we need is the Kingfish hockey team back.
Imagine this, for a moment. A summer minor league hockey league. They'd be the only game in town. They could partner with Live After 5 having their games (where they serve booze in the River Center which has ice rink capabilities), after the bands finish. People would flock to cool hockey games indoors on a hot summer night. It would bridge the Downtown Dead time by getting out at 10:00.

to make any downtown livable, it needs a decent grocery store, that is the problem with a lot of mid sized cities downtowns
Rouse's supposed to open in the old Fidelity Bank Building at 3rd and Main.

Rouses would be nice, but I think it's Mathernes.
How is Mathernes deli?

Solid. Boar's Head supplies most of their meat, their plate lunches are solid, they're store baked breads are delicious, and they have in-house sushi chefs preparing fresh sushi rolls.
It's no Rouses, but it's still a solid supermarket.

Residences/rooftops. Need more peopleliving downtown to bring full time services such as drug stores, grocery stores etc. Now downtown is mostly made up of what happens on 3rd street, which is mostly bars. With the IBM, old commerce building, old capital one and a few other buildings under construction converting to condos/apartments things will change. A grocery is opening in the fall, downtown has come along way in the last 10 years, but the next 3 will be the real turning point.

You think downtown has been neglected? Have you not heard what every person has said about how it's been improving over the last 10-15 years?

This. It's possibly never been better, and it's getting better every day.
