Mountain Brook outside of Birmingham, AL, is extremely underrated. It's gorgeous.

What I like about that location is that you're 4 hours from Gulf Shores, 5 from New Orleans, 2 from Atlanta, 3 from Nashville, 3.5 from the Smoky Mountains. It's a great central location to start a road trip.

It's the only place I'll go if we decide to move closer to my wife's family. It's just hard to find a house that doesn't need 40 years of upgrades.

Charleston - if you have the money and the lineage. Charleston can be extremely insular and it doesn't take to outsiders. However, it is a beautiful city, beautiful architecture, beautiful women, great beaches, very laid-back and very easy going,

It isn't the most progressive city, but as mentioned earlier, if you have the lineage and money, you'll be well taken care of. It's a "boys will be boys" kinda town.

Married a gump too huh? My wife is from around there. I like some of the Bham suburbs but the city is very meh. My wife would never move back to Alabama anyway.

It may be underrated to people from outside the area, but it's pretty highly rated among us AL folks. Definitely considered one of the best areas in the state imo.

Madison, AL seems to be a better kept secret to me. Further north so add a couple hours to the beach trips. But closer to the places like Chattanooga and Nashville. Just outside of Huntsville, which I read was one of the fastest growing economies in the country. It's not as big as Bham, but less trashy imo.

Contiguous states, I'd say Bellingham, Wa would be up there.

Sea
Mountains
Mild climate
University town
Outdoor activities abound
Close to Vancouver and Seattle
Lots of breweries if that's your thing
Close to Cascades and San Juans
Lot less rain than Seattle

I spent a summer in Bellingham. My uncle owned a law firm there and invited me to come work for him for the summer after my freshman year at LSU.

guess I didn't say much there. It was a beautiful area. I did a lot of things outdoors. White water rafting, hiking, taking the ferry and island hopping. It's definitely a quality place to live.
