What causes mid life issues?

Is it that people only planned for life to that point whether its their 40s or 50s? Feel like they didnt do something in their youth they need to do?

I think for me it's the changing family dynamics with older kids moving out, some still here, some coming and going on semester breaks, etc. I've tried to keep doing my hobbies and husband does his and we do some together. It's helped I think as neither of us has had a real "crisis".
