What are your local schools doing for remote learning?

A teacher friend said they are doing remote learning. But they can't force the students to attend or do the work. They also can't fail them for non participation. I'm not sure that they're spelling out that last part to the students, but that's the message the teachers got. High school me would be starting summer right. But in hindsight, it was probably in my best interest to not miss 2 months of school. Arguably, 2 months of missed school over a 12 year education probably isn't a huge deal. They have more than 2 months of unnecessary fluff. But it could have a ripple effect long term for the student depending on the curriculum being missed.
I don't have kids so I don't have a dog in the fight, but that doesn't seem like a good idea. In fact, even before this, they've made it all but impossible to fail students. If they fail a student, the teacher has to fill out hella paperwork and jump through a million hoops showing what they did to help the student and what the student has done to help themselves. Sounds easy enough but apparently even after making a compelling case, the school may decide to pass the student regardless.
Those with kids in grade school, what are your schools doing?

They can't make the work compulsory because you'd get hit with a hell of a lawsuit if an impoverished household didn't have the hardware or software to access lessons, submit assignments, run a program, etc. The good parents will make their kids do the "optional" work so they're still learning, the bad parents will let them sit around the house and take an early summer. Not too much unlike a regular school year to be honest

I don’t know but they robo dial me every day and leave a long voicemail that I have to then delete. Very annoying.
The kids are on ABC Mouse. It seems to be better at teaching them to read than kindergarten was.

My son’s school absolutely expects they do the work, we got a call for my son turning in his PE assignments. I doubt they’d fail anyone since it’s private.

My kid's teacher had given some assignments to be done. Wasn't much, like 30 minutes worth of work a day and she was uploading things to Google Classroom for the class.
Well, as of yesterday, the school board had them STOP posting anything to google classroom at all so i guess its just a free for all now. Something doesn't seem right with all this.

Geez.. my kids have 2-3 hours or work to do every day and have stuff that has to be turned in to be graded as well at least two graded assignments a week. While I'm happy they are still learning my wife and I are no teachers it's hard freakin' work. Kudos to all the teachers that put up with this crap every day!

My son is in Texas/ 7th grade, all of the kids have a chrome book they check out every morning (prior to corona) and return before leaving school.
They use these to do 85% of their work in class.
I went and picked his up last week and my son started doing his work from home this week, the teachers use google classroom for assignments.
He's doing good so far but can do the entire days work by 10:00 am if he starts at 8:00 am.

My kids go to separate private schools. Both are required to have a laptop so the teachers are holding class via video conferencing.
It seems to be working out well.

Dunham uses Google Hangout and Catholic is using Zoom...both schools are taking this very seriously

Ours is straight up busy work with only 2 teachers even trying.
Like.... write how Coronavirus is affecting your life. A paragraph each day. Which I could maybe understand for English grammar but not for Algebra 2.

My kids (K and 1st) have journals, math, readying assignments, physical activities being given to them daily by their teachers. Their teachers email us daily plans, and ask that pictures be taken of them doing their work.
We weren't going to allow them to become potato heads, and had planned to come up with something for them to do. But it's nice to have a guide to follow by their teachers. They also have private FB groups, so teachers can post to the kids...and the kids can post to the teachers/ other kids in the class.

Bingo......same here in the Woodlands.
Well, they aren't assigned Chromebooks, but CSID assumes everyone has tech to complete assignments.
My High Schoolers are working their arse off (but still in shorter time frame). My 7th grader can knock it out as yours does.
BUT, all of it comes with a disclaimer as CSID will not be able to fail anyone due to even one child not having the e-tools.

I wonder if someone complained that not all kids had access to the internet to see the assignments??

I've got Disney+. Thirty years worth of Simpsons episodes will teach my kids everything they'll ever need to know in life.

Public is doing nothing due to “at risk” homes not having internet.
My kids are doing online learning with test and video chatting with teachers
ETA: they were allowed to take home their chrome books from school

I teach math at a private high school in Nola and we’re sticking to the school schedule. The kids have some sort of pre-recorded lesson or zoom meeting during their class period. They’re responsible for homework assignments, quizzes, & tests. Most of my students are grateful to keep going. They’re applying to college this summer and many are still trying to improve ACT scores. Most are just bored or stressed because their schedule has been disrupted and they’re happy to have the work because it gives them some normalcy.

My daughter is getting lessons through Google Classroom. Me and the wife are being updated via email and the schools Plus Portals online grading system.
The principle had to tell the teachers to calm down though. They were sending assignments as if these kids are sitting in class all day. It was too much.
As far as I know, she is still responsible for turning in assignments and taking quizzes. Even if she wasn't, I'd still make her do them.

Same.
My only real complaint is that my daughter is a Sr. and all of her fun end of the year stuff is cancelled.
