What are “they” trying to prevent by restricting mass gatherings?

By “they” I mean any community, officials, governments and health organizations. No one batted an eye about the high probability of getting sick due to large gatherings prior to coronavirus.

Is it just me or is this an insane overreaction to a similar version of the cold/flu? I’m perplexed.

Politicians must do something so they can feel better about themselves.

rarely do their decisions represent the smartest or best choices.

Coronavirus is no different.

Somewhat rhetorical question as the restrictions are getting absurd

Are you stupid?

They're trying to prevent a bunch of people getting it then bringing it back home. This isn't rocket science, people.

The theory is that nothing will prevent the virus from spreading, but social distancing etc slows down the rate of infection. Which in turn spreads out the impact to the healthcare system so they aren’t hit all at once like the Italians are dealing with.

Doesn’t mean that’s how things will shake out but that is the basic reasoning.

I think, and this is just a hunch, the goal may be to contain the spread and prevent a higher number of deaths from the virus.

Something else is going on.

The mass global panic didn’t occur for anything else the last 15 years.

Swine Flu
Ebola
H1N1
Zikka

Etc......

Nothing else has come near this level of panic and hysteria in the media and general populace. Why?

There’s a reason we don’t understand yet.

Large portions of a Local population getting sick at once and thus overwhelming community healthcare resources.

Or just nursing homes, where about 80 percent of the deaths have occurred.

This is exactly it. Our healthcare system would be quickly overloaded without these preventative measures. Once it starts spreading too rapidly hospitals/medical staff become overrun by it
