How does one not understand the extra precaution that can and should surround a novel virus?

It’s been explained multiple times. You either aren’t willing to listen or you don’t care.
If you truly don’t understand how this is different from the flu, then no one here can help you.
Number of deaths is not the concern, nor the basis for action, as has been stated many times.
The seasonal flu is spread out geographically and temporally. It does not overwhelm the hospitals.
This virus moves quickly, has a relatively high rate of cases requiring intensive care, and can overwhelm healthcare systems. It really, really is that simple.

We have decided as a society we are still ok gathering during flu season, even though that helps spread the infection
That is nothing but a simple fact that we are ok as a whole with the total deaths associated with the flu as it relates to social gatherings

Decreasing large events every year during winter would absolutely decrease flu related deaths and illnesses.
