The theory is that nothing will prevent the virus from spreading, but social distancing etc slows down the rate of infection. Which in turn spreads out the impact to the healthcare system so they aren’t hit all at once like the Italians are dealing with.

Doesn’t mean that’s how things will shake out but that is the basic reasoning.

Can the mods just go ahead and sticky that? Guessing it is going to have to be repeated about 10000 times or so.

3/4ths of those infected recover with the same treatment you’d do if you had a cold/flu

Really? National outages of toilet paper and paper towels and cleaning products?

National canceling of all public gatherings?

Campuses closing all over the country?

Offices pushing people to work from home?

I don’t remember anything near this level of obnoxiousness for any of those prior pandemics.

This is different and we don’t know why yet.

Did 1st world developed countries see the infection rates that places like Italy have? They're trying to make sure our healthcare system isn't overrun like that.

The scary theory is that the measures Italy are taking is actually a test for the rest of us

You don’t think there is a massive bizarre response to this?

Why is anyone who tries to talk about how bizarre this is being handled immediately shouted down?

No one actually having an intelligent discussion about it proving they actually know what they're talking about is being shouted down.

People like you who are all "lol it's a cold, why the panic" are being shouted down and rightfully so.

Look stopping these mass gatherings will do frick all of those people are still going out to grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and other retail operations. It’s not like the people who were going to go to those events will now suddenly stay at home in isolation.

You either quarantine everything or let it ride, half assing it will do a whole lot of nothing.

Who’s dying? People who have medical issues. Are healthy 23 year olds dropping like flies? How many people die from the flu each year? 56,000! LINK

Not to this extent.

It quickly became apparent that Zikka was a nothingburger and Ebola posed little threat to the general public. H1N1 was a big deal, but it never overwhelmed whole regions like Covid has. I really don't know how you can look at China, Iran, and Italy and say this is not cause for concern at the highest levels. So far this thing has been as bad as advertised, at least in sporadic regions. The US will probably not be laid prostrate, and some areas may not see much if any effect. But it's safe to say other areas likely will be hammered, with local breakdown of healthcare and other services. I'm glad to see our national leadership finally seems to be taking it seriously.

Yeah there's no difference between a place with a max capacity of like 200 and something like the Houston rodeo that has millions of attendees.

They are trying to prevent the Health Care system from getting overwhelmed. One person having the standard flu in your house is not as bad as your entire family having the flu.
