The mortality rate of people who contract the corona virus is already a shade over 1%. The mortality rate for people who contract the flu is less than 1%.
Seriously folks, there is tons of legit info out there on this and why there is a perceived overreaction. You don't even have to dig very hard to find it.

This is just the next rung on the ladder for the totalitarians. They will pass another “Patriot Act” in response to this outbreak and posit themselves as the ones with the “solutions” to the problems they largely helped to create in the first place. Limitations on public gathering etc.

All people need to do in order to understand the public closings and cancellations is compare how SK, Japan, etc have handled the virus with how Italy has handled it and look at the results. Italy waited far too long to get things under control.
The only evidence we have shows that large scale social distancing measures are relatively effective in slowing the rate of infection and reducing stresses on the hospitals. This in turn leads to a reduction in deaths. Overloaded healthcare systems are the major worry—as is becoming very apparent in Italy.
It cannot be said enough: these measures will not totally stop the virus from spreading throughout society, nor are they expected to.

As has been pointed out again and again, if this virus becomes as widespread as the flu, it will kill a lot more than 50k. Flu is everywhere and you practically can't avoid getting it. This virus is not there, yet.

How does one not understand the extra precaution that can and should surround a novel virus?
We have a live example of how this virus can swamp a large, modern, European nations healthcare system to the point that people who come in are dying because there aren’t enough ventilators. And yet, still, people don’t seem to get it.
There is not one instance of any nation slowing or reducing the amount of cases without drastic government measures reducing social interaction. Not one. If we do nothing, the numbers are going to explode.
Should we just let that happen so that we can feel strong and manly, or act like we’re too cool to give a shite?
Are you that pissed that the NCAA tournament won’t have fans?
