Correct, but your third grade argument regarding deaths from other diseases certainly points in that direction if you take it to its conclusion.

People dying from the disease itself is not nearly as high of a concern as people dying because they have no access to care due to inundation. That is a concern unique to this novel virus and totally nonexistent on any scale with seasonal flu.

Apparently it is to a whole lot of people.

I want to say to people, it's not about you. It's about your parents who likely have pre-existing conditions (like 60% of Americans) who put them as risk. Or your grandparents. Or a family member you know who is going through chemo.
For those who will get emotional and not read properly

I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS LIKE THE FLU

But the flu also is bad for those people, and yet we are ok with non necessary social gatherings every year during winter

If we canceled those, it is 100% a fact that would help save lives from the flu. So why aren’t we campaigning for that annually? If it’s about saving lives, why act only now?

How many times is someone going to have to answer before you stop asking?

It’s not about the friggin death total. It’s about the capacity to treat the infected. Damn, man

I am just factually pointing out as a society we are ok with the flu deaths caused by mass gatherings during winter, as we have never had this scale of a want to cancel those events to help save lives from the flu, which canceling those events absolutely would do

That can’t be argued

You don’t think lowering flu infections every single year would help open up hospitals and allow for better service across the board?

Regardless, most in this thread and around the nation are making the argument “if it just saves 1 life...”

Yet you keep bringing up the flu.

Weird.

Only as proof we do not cancel mass gatherings to lower a 50k death total

I am not comparing the viruses at all

Sure it can. We have vaccines to lessen or eliminate the flu in the population. We know it's not going to mutate into a disease we can't handle if it spreads. Schools sometimes close down for flu (multiple counties in Kentucky have this year).

Go back and read about the Spanish Flu in 1918. They ordered quarantines, closed buildings/companies, schools, etc.

Which you can still do

People in New Rochelle can’t

And even with that vaccine, 50k people still die in America

It undoubtedly would help lower deaths if we cancelled events every single year. But we have decided from a death standpoint, we don’t need to cancel events to lower that number

Because we don’t care too. That’s the answer

This physician that just posted in our group is probably ok with the Rochelle restrictions on their liberties

“Hey guys—so I’m recovering from COVID-19, day 11..I am part of the outbreak in New Rochelle. I had the whole flu-like symptoms business at onset (low grade fever, chills, weakness, cough, anorexia with 10lb loss (which is awesome btw)...all I have left is this lingering cough...the strange think is I have no cough when I am lying down—what’s up with that???

Anyone know how long the cough lasts? Is it a usual post viral cough that lasts weeks or months?

I have read on prior posts that people like me have chest CTs that look like shite (even without overt pneumonia)

Unfortunately there are friends of mine who tested positive and were celebrating that they felt pretty damn good but then developed pneumonia on days 8-10...several now intubated and im trying to get them remdesivir or actemra (of course I am quarantined so not there personally)

anyone think these drugs will work? “

If no one ever left their house ever we would reduce lots of deaths from lots of things.

But the flu doesn’t overwhelm the hospitals of entire countries, and has been a known commodity for a hundred plus years. once again, for the tenth time, this is not about number of total deaths. If you can’t look at Italy’s hospital situation and understand what the effects of overwhelming the system is, and why we are making moves to prevent that, then you’re truly beyond understanding.

Ok? Duh. No one is disputing that.

What everyone is responding with is trying to explain to you how stupid and inapplicable that point is in this discussion.

I haven’t said that, and neither has anyone in this thread. Go argue against that straw man somewhere else.
