Most of them aren't doing any litigating. They're marketing and running the firm. Litigation and deposition is for junior associates.

are there any advantages to going with one of these scumbags as opposed to the run of the mill local lawyer?

will mckernan, morris bart, william gee, etc do a better job than your run of the mill local lawyer?

One of the firms is known for aggressive litigating. Look at which commercials are talking about how much the client got and which are the clients talking about what happened at trial.

The attorneys that market themselves heavily, like Morris Bart, are really just trying to get you to call them first so that they can refer your case to the best local attorney and then Morris Bart picks up a nice referral fee and buys more ad space to attract more cases.

My father, who is a lawyer (mostly real estate), said that the two big ones, McKernan and Dudley debosier, actually are respected in the judicial community for being prepared and representing clients well. I was surprised.

You are surprised that they are good at what they do even though a bunch of jealous broke dicks on a message board doesn’t like them?

If you are talking about people with their name on the building, they don't necessarily have a reputation as a lawyer, per se. They do very little actual litigating, and mostly just run the business. You rarely, if ever, see any of them in court or at depositions.

If you are talking about the offices as a whole, there is a general reputation for each office. This is typically a reputation that is cultivated from the top down and is more institutional. And then the individual lawyers in that office also have reputations. Some good, some bad.

If you are comparing the big personal injury law firms and the smaller personal injury law firms, it's probably a wash. If you are talking about a divorce lawyer or criminal lawyer taking your personal injury case, probably lean to the big personal injury firms, because they know what they are doing. It's always better to be with someone who specializes in the area.
