Ultimately, it is about survival of yourself and your “tribe”. Often it is to secure resources and eliminate any threats to those resources.

Resources

Land, money, oil, gold.

We're really really good at killing each other for things that give us better things. It's kinda sad we haven't evolved passed war honestly

At its most simple far too many humans are just evil pieces of shite. They have justified thousands of reasons to hurt and kill other humans over the existence of time. We're simply a flawed creation at our core. It's sad, but rather simple

Religion …. And everything else is a distant second.

A charismatic leader can convince people to do almost anything in the name of religion….and they won’t even question it.

Resources, and little else.

Everything else comes later as means of justification.

poontang

(at least in one famous example... a thousand ships and all)

I hate when the term "tribalism" is used... it is natural. We are genetically developed to at least be wary, if not fearful and agressive towards, "others"... people not like us. It is one of the inherent (un-mutable) traits of human beings that drove our evolution and provided towards survival of the species.

If we can't frick it, kill it. Sometimes both. It's the original "au natural"

Power. Communists have killed more people than pretty much everything else you mentioned combined.

According to Thucydides, three reasons:

1. Fear
2. Honor
3. Interest

It’s power. And to sustain it you need resources, more and more resources. So oil this day and age is the top of the chain.
