I have an amateur theory that our consciousness is really kind of like a name your adventure book, where we read the story and at certain points we have to choose which page to turn to. That means that certain thoughts and feelings are automatic and we are only able to react to them, not create them. Fleeting thoughts are a big manifestation of this idea that is easily relatable.
This theory also leads down the path of us not really being autonomous or having true free will. There are only a finite number of actions we could take at any given moment. With enough computational power (of which we don't have yet) you could theoretically predict the future or 100% recreate the past with CGI. So, those things in mind, we don't have free will, we have limited will.
