disc golf has a pretty low barrier for entry. go to a local shop and buy a few disc and you have what you need. put them in a walmart bag to carry them around in. Courses are usually free to play as well.

I tie several hundred flies every winter. I think I might spend about $250 on materials (hooks, beads, thread, chenille, etc.). Considering that I'd probably have to pay anywhere from $2.99 to $4.29 per fly at BassPro or a local fly shop, I think I'm doing pretty well. Of course, if you don't fly fish there's really no point in picking up this hobby since the best part of tying them is imagining the fish you'll catch on 'em.

Birdwatching
I just spent about 5 minutes watching 3 crows attacking a red-tailed hawk in midflight.
Kinda felt bad for the hawk. Nice reminder that Nature is not a Disney movie...
A large monarch butterfly keeps flying by as well...

Biking. Of course I prefer mountain biking, but either would do.
Further, you could drop thousands on a good bike, but you could easily get a respectable bike on FB marketplace for just a few hundred bucks.
Then you're more or less set..

3D printing, surprisingly. You can get an Ender 3v2 (which is just fine for learning and tooling around with) for super cheap and alot of the slicer programs and a good deal of models are open source and free. PLA filament will run you $15-20 a roll but depending on what your printing a roll can last you a while. Theres a pretty steep learning curve but thats part of the fun, for me at least. Id go as vanilla as possible with your machine and work your way up from there.

LIbrary card.
Reading
Checking out CD's and rip the ones you like
Checking out DVD's. Great way to see if you actually like something enough to buy.

What about wood carving? You basically need a knife or two with varying geometries and then wood.

as a former amateur racer rocking 12 bikes in his basement right now i can tell you this is not correct.
any self-respecting cyclist is going to be drooling over the latest tech & components and finding a way to justify upgrading, adding power meters, clipless pedals and shoes, bike computer, sunglasses, helmets, front & rear cameras, never-full-bike-pack with tools, co2 cartridges...
equipment-cost-wise cycling is up there w/ golfing except no green fees.

Following up on this. Go buy the cheap lathe from harbor freight.
Now every fallen branch or log you find can be turned (pun intended) into stuff.

After school mentoring. There are too many kids with single parents that could use a positive role model to look up to.

Knitting. It’s not that tough to learn the basics and it’s quietly satisfying. The only scarf and hat I wear in winter are ones I knitted.

Try gambling at the casino, either table games or slots. Worst decision to pickup the habit, it is as bad as smoking or social drinking.
Every once and awhile you catch a big win, but most of the time you are feeding the casino.

How did this thread go 4 pages without a mention of Garage Sale flipping? Apparently, it's quite the opposite of cost prohibitive....I've heard of people planning trips to Japan just on their profits alone. Maybe just a rumor, though
