Had a meeting this morning and haven't been in a state building in a few years. Walk in, realize we have to go through metal detectors and think...shite.

For shits and giggle, drop wallet, sunglasses, pen, handkerchief around small flashlight, watch, and two pocket knives into the bin. Walk through the metal obviously nothing goes off.

Guy hands me everything back and doesn't even acknowledge what happened.

So I have to know, what the hell are they there for?

The appearance of safety.

I have to go through the player's entrance at the dome for every Saints home game. I carry a backpack. I walk through the detector. The guard opens my backpack, glances in it, and sends me on my way. I could have 5 pounds of C4 and an AR15 with a chainsaw attachment in that bag, and the guard wouldn't have noticed.

What kind of meeting in a state building would require you to carry two pocket knives? Wait, what would ever require you to carry two pocket knives?

So he gave the knives back to you. I guess they are just worried about firearms. I wonder if he would have given a Bowie knife back to you to carry in.

I had to go into the Juvenile Court building out by the airport years back and noticed the metal detector wasn’t plugged into the wall. I asked the EBRSO Deputy why it wasn’t plugged in and he said it was because it “keeps going off.” I just shook my head and walked away.

I carry a small Buck Prince to use if I just need to open a package or something in the office.

I carry a larger fixed blade if I actually need a knife, prybar, or makeshift hammer when on a site.

The second knife is a 4.5 inch fixed blade not a Howie, but not that small either.

Security theater mostly.

The only time I had something taken was when I was flying home from Christmas and one of my gifts was a wine corkscrew. I only had a carryon and there was no way I was paying $25 just to keep my gift corkscrew.

Sure enough, they found it and took it.

They have one at my kids high school. It is so sensitive zippers set it off, therefore, completely useless.

To provide kickbacks to the powerful metal detector lobby.

For looks.

Security at state buildings is godawful.

I could walk through carrying Neo’s arsenal from The Matrix and not get a second look.
