Spirit is the worst, and it's not even close, at least domestically. US air is like riding a unicorn through the clouds with a supermodel while eating bacon compared to spirit.
Best domestic airline for me would be virginamerica

I have literally flown every domestic except AirTran and JetBlue. The worst is American for me, always frigging late. Lately I have flown Frontier often from DEN to MSY and back. To MSY is great, from MSY to DEN it has been late, every time. I did fly Spirit once just to check it out. It was ok, very budget minded but at least the seats were comfortable and the attendants were nice.

I flew United/Continental exclusively for years and have over half million miles with them. Their service started getting bad and when they changed the elite status program that was it. Might as well fly the el cheapos anyway, so I do.

US Air has been ok for me but knock on wood because I'm flying to OKC through them next week. Plus, connecting in charlotte isn't that bad.

I have always Delta, and flying through ATL has always been a terrible experience.

American Airlines. My grandmother passed away while I was out of town. They wanted to charge me ~$700 to move my flight up 24 hours. After arguing for an hour and being put on hold several times I still had to pay ~$200. Same flight, plenty of seats open, just 24 hours sooner. American is not even an option for me anymore.

That sucks. I know most airlines have bereavement fares so I figured switching flights would be the same thing. Apparently not and that's somewhat shitty.

You can't count Spirit IMO
Their literal marketing campaign is that they cut out all the amenities to be as cheap as possible.
If you fly Spirit you should know the deal

Spirit, the mega-mart of airlines. Accidentally flew them once, will never make that mistake again!

I refuse to fly United ever again. Delta and Southwest are my main domestic carriers now. The best I have flown internationally is Air New Zealand. I am flying KLM this summer so I hope they are solid.

as a business traveler, I don't ever see myself getting on a southwest plane

They are very convenient for business travel within the state of Texas.

I'll drive 20 minutes past DFW to get to Love Field if I'm traveling within the state. Getting in and out of Love is incredibly fast and easy. I can make several same day meetings in different Texas cities on Southwest. Can't really do that on American.

Outside of Texas, I'm usually on American.

This.

They explain up front that they are bare bones. They don't hide it.

I only choose airlines with first class seats. Most of the other stuff doesn't bother but if I can't get a drink relatively quickly, I start getting annoyed.

I do enjoy whiskey and vodka drinks while flying
