Do kids of sober parents even want to drink in front of them? I feel like it would be weird for kids to drink in front of their parents that don’t drink.

Hard day of physical labor, maybe you let the boy share a beer with you at 15-16

seems to be a matter of preference or opinion and I don't seek to change that. (notice, there's no wine emoji too)!

About 16 and a half. We didn't want our kids to do like we did and sneak around and hide it. Their entire peer group of kids are very aware of the dangers of drunk driving and its consequences. They always go places in a couple groups w/ designated drivers and know that if something happens to one of them to contact one of the parents. With Uber/Lfyt there is no reason for it any longer. We let the 17 yr olds drink beer w/ the college kids on our recent family/friends trip to Destin. They are a hell of a lot more responsible than we were at their age. When they go out they will even tell us who is drinking / where / how etc... Some will flame but if you believe telling them that they have to wait until 21 you are fooling yourself, remember when you were that age !

In Louisiana can’t 18 yo legally drink in the presence of their parents?? Seem to recall our school counselor posting this on the news letter when sharing the state laws re: drinking around prom time.

Friend of ours said that their son was served alcohol in a restaurant at dinner with his parents — server checked both ids to verify address.

My kids had a sip of beer in the 6-8 range. When my son was in high school, I didn't pretend to think he wasn't drinking...but I did tell him, if he's going to drink, to do it where he was going to end up for the night and to never drink and drive or ride with anyone who had been drinking. Also told him if he ever, for whatever reason or whatever time, needed a ride after he's been drinking to call me and I'd go get him, no questions asked.

I was given my first beer by dad when I was 15. Almost 16. Fishing off an old bridge in Destin. Lukewarm banquet beer. I somehow finished it. Cheap little 6 pack cooler he had for years. Didn’t hold ice or really keep anything cold. The first time I drank was a couple years before that stealing liquor from his bottles. Had no clue what to mix with what so we had some nasty stuff. Finally settled into screwdrivers and Jack and Coke.

This was our rule as well. Or spend the night where ever they were and no one would be upset with them.

I can only remember a few times our kids not observing our rules about drinking.

Our youngest daughter thought it would be cool to post a pic on FB(when FB just got started) of her and a friend in her bedroom with a bottle of rum. Lost my shite and called my wife and told her to get her to delete that shite.

Other time was our son got arrested one night for an open container in his glove box while driving home. I was asleep on the couch and her cell rings about 2 am so I jump up and answer it. "Will you accept this call from the Lauderdale detention center"

I remember waking my wife up with the news. She cried and cried. Why aren't you getting ready? I need to go get my baby

I think it was an 8 hour hold or something so I went back to bed. We go get him and you'd think he'd been in a prison camp.

He wanted to go home and sleep...naw player...get the grass mowed and weed eat really good.

Started buying my boy and his friends beer at 15. Would rather them play beer pong at my house instead of at some strangers house. I even join in and show em how it’s done from time to time

Happened to my buddy. My parents were usually cool with us drinking. As long as we were at my house. Buddy gets wasted at my house. He was supposed to go home but I wouldn’t let him drive or even walk home. He didn’t live far from us. I went to bed and didn’t bother waking my parents up to tell them he was passed out on the couch. Next morning was a Saturday and the phone rings. Dad answers and it’s my friends dad. He said he wasn’t sure if he was still there but he would check and send him home. Walks in the den and it reeks of beer. Wakes him up, and told him that he needed to go home and be sure to tell his dad that he has already chewed him out. And really lay it on thick. Buddy gets home and has to push mow their yard and edge the entire thing. Worst hangover ever. His dad knew that we would have drinks at our house and was fine with it but was more mad that he didn’t let them know.

Tough question since I had a drinking problem and have been sober 6 years. I do believe that if she is to try it I’d rather with my wife and I but we have some time to figure an age 12 or 13 I’d guess.

Genius. Get that tolerance up so they can be a good drunk driver when they are eligible for a drivers license

Be careful. If a genetic predisposition she could have the same battles you do.

Yep. My siblings and I were dipshits generally speaking, but drinking and driving was a major no-no. My aunt, my moms sister, was killed by a dd. One morning my mom calls me to tell me my younger brother was picked up for drunk driving. When I went to pick him up, I just happened to know the jailer. He allowed me to go into the cell to get him. I wore him flat out in that jail cell.
