To be fair to his point, Catholics usually have big families. We don't, but my dad, his parents, all had 5-8 siblings. That starts turning into a huge fricking family.
I'll say that's a fair point with the Catholic families. That starts becoming fairly absurd.

. I don't understand why treating the bride like a stripper is a necessary part of you meeting and dancing with people.
Alrighty then. End of discussion since you're retarded.

I don't think it's retarded, since I guarantee you almost everyone who is not familiar with the ritual that their minds will start veering in that general direction. Maybe not there in South Louisiana, but kind of like how the rednecks in my state look at the Confederate flag, outsiders will be thinking of the stripping angle with the money dance. If my daughter was the bride, I sure as shite wouldn't want at least half the people present thinking this.

I've just only really noticed it down here in LA. I don't think it's trashy, and most of the time I don't participate cus I'm usually there for the booz. Catholic weddings are miserable.

That's not what the money dance is for. It's a chance for family and friends to dance with the bride or groom, have a moment alone with them to tell them something special, and then give them some extra money for the honeymoon.
TRASHY. No matter how you spin it.
Isn't the whole wedding gift thing enough? And if certain people are so inclined and thoughtful as to want to give extra for the honeymoon they can certainly do so without the prostitution like act of paying for a half minute of dance.

It's not prostitution. It's a gift given in a fun and personal way, usually accompanied by some wisdom or a joke. I would say, as a guy, dancing with the grandmother-in-law and hearing a funny story about your wife as a kid is way more fun and memorable than opening an envelope with $40 in it. It's harmless fun. Most of the weddings I have been to had money dances. The ones that didn't were all very much so high class affairs or were up north.

A wedding is 1 thing above the actual blessed union; a LOOK AT ME show. Based on 100s of "Trashy?" threads on the OT, by consistent rulings, weddings are trashy. Or at least weddings/elopes that have more than just the bride, groom, minimal witnesses, & officiant.

The fact that anyone on this board has the audacity to call something trashy is both hilarious and sad at the same time. This has to be one of the greatest compilations of trash thinking it's high and mighty on the face of the earth.

I spent 60 bucks a head on my wedding in New Orleans with an open bar at pat Os on the river......
I didn't have a money dance, my wife is from New Orleans and it wasn't a traditional thing but I'm from south Louisiana and it is.
Even though we didn't have one, she still got close to 1000 bucks from old men and women at our wedding.
You see when people love you and you are super trashy, they want to be trashy too and help you succeed in life.
I'm glad Cajuns are trashy people......

The only time I've participated, I handed the bride a $1 bill, pulled up a chair, sat down and pulled out a stack.
I hadn't had a drink in six months and everyone thought I was off the wagon.
Shitty lap dance.

Is this more of a regional thing or more of a class thing?
Neither...it's a cultural and traditional thing. Anyone who thinks it has anything to do with class is as insecure as an 11 yr old girl.

Looking at different wedding message boards it does not appear to be regional as the question is asked by people from all over the country. That question happens to concern whether it's trashy or not. If that is the most routine question that concerns people about a money/dollar dance, then it's trashy and people recognize it as such. It appears that all of the excuses given are just means of rationalizing a tactless decision.

Look at the cultures/regions who participate in this "tradition". You are copying them when you do this trashy shite

I find it incredibly hard to believe so many people on this board have never heard of a money dance or been to a wedding where it occurred. I'm highly skeptical because I think many people say it to boost their "e-class" - just like the people who often say they're not on Facebook or other social media during those threads.
If you've been to 10 or more weddings and have the slightest bit of diversity in your family/friends, I'm sure a money dance has occurred.
ETA: I'm not calling you out specifically, but you're one of many in this thread who have said the same, and I think it's bull shite for the most part.
Not only have I never been to such a wedding, this is the first I heard of it.
South Carolina isn't the epitome of class, but this is ridiculous. Do you give gifts or is this the gift?

I like this part...
"Many, including traditional North American etiquette experts, consider the practice of asking for money from invited guests via the "Money Dance", as incorrect.[1]"
Trashy

Yeah, shocking the Slavs came up with this and it may be less than a century old. Seems to me some piece of trash heard of it about 50 years ago in Louisiana and then decided to implement it at his daughters wedding, and it sadly caught on.

Ive been to weddings that had it who were way richer and classier than anyone on this board.
