Definitely class.

trashy and for poor people. I haven't been to a wedding in the last decade where people did that. If you need money that badly you shouldn't be having a ceremony.
So how is having a dance where people hand you cash any different than accepting an envelope with cash or a gift card? Or accepting any gift for that matter? Is a bridal shower trashy? I guess you refused all gifts at the door for your wedding- assuming you are married. It's a gift- no more, no less.
Only difference is you hand it to the bride/groom on the dance floor, give them a few kind words and send them on their way.

I've been to enough weddings here in the South & a collection around the country. But have realized recently that some weddings do not have the "Money Dance". Is this more of a regional thing or more of a class thing?
I've never been to a wedding with a Money Dance to be honest with you. Didn't hear about it until this website. It sounds trashy as frick to me.

Friend of mine married a Hawaiian. They had one, and collected a mice chunk of change in the process. I guess it's fairly common among the Islanders

Not any more than the plethora of "showers" and parties women have for weddings, births, etc. At least you get something useful

There was nothing not classy about my wedding. Reception cost over 50 grand and had almost 1000 people at it.
We got a little over two grand from the money dance.
I don't think I've ever been to a wedding that didn't have a money dance, and my wedding was one of the cheaper weddings out of all of my close friends. I've been to weddings at the Houston country club and new Orleans museum of art that had money dances.

Well, it's clear you don't really go outside of Louisiana too often if you have yet to go to a wedding that doesn't have one of these. I really don't think most other states do this. If you got married in Memphis and you started a Money Dance, no one would have a clue what yall were doing and would look at it as simply bizarre and trashy once it was explained to everyone.

It's a trashy regional thing

Houston, D.C., Montgomery, New Jersey. All had money dances.

There's no fricking way New Jersey or D.C. does this. I'm guessing this had at least a bride or groom from Lousiana, and the people from Louisiana knew what to do, but people from New Jersey wouldn't be shy about telling the bride and groom to frick off for such an antic. I've been watching movies with weddings in them for years, and I have yet to see a reference to the Money Dance. There's no way this regularly takes place in other parts of the country.

I've been to some very trashy and very classy wedding in the Midwest and none of them had money dances.

It was first cousins that were from here. We have a really big family and travel well.
The Houston people were the ones that looked confused about it. That wedding had a lot of really really rich old Houston people at it that seemed really snobby.
I know it's a regional thing. I guess crawfish boils are trashy too.

Crawfish boils have nothing to do with tacky money dances.

M If I have a crawfish boil and everyone brings 20 bucks to chip in, is it then a trashy crawfish boil?

No, that's a cuisine. That in principle is no different from a barbecue, you're just putting something different on the menu.
If you're throwing money at a girl in a dress, most people's first thought is going to be a strip club. It would just really take me out of the moment if that happened in a wedding I went to.

Yeah. If you have a crawfish boil you're paying for it. Your guests should not have to chip in, unless it was one of their ideas in the first place and it happens that your house was the agreed upon place.

A crawfish boil is not a wedding. Yes, they should contribute to eat the meal. For a wedding though, no expectation like that is on the table in the first place. You're not there to reimburse the bride, groom, and their family for the wedding they paid for. It's a nice gesture to give them something, but not required.

It's no more trashy than wedding or baby showers. People from different cultures just do different things.
