Location of the reception doesn't matter. The amount spent on the reception doesn't matter. A money dance is always tactless and probably a signal that the people aren't as "classy" as you think they are, or they had a brief lapse in judgement and taste.

whatever makes you feel better.
Shouldn't you be at brunch right now sipping mimosa's with all the other classy people? or are you still playing tennis at the club in your sweater vest? If you need someone to clean your yacht i can come down to the yacht club this afternoon after i get off my shitty job.
Stay classy bro.

It's essentially like giving a wedding gift.

I was weird about wedding gifts too though. I just don't like asking people to give me stuff. I had a hard time putting anything on my registry over like $50. I don't care if some people will get together to buy things or stuff like that. I just don't like the idea of putting out there "hey, you should buy me this $300 blender". Same with the money dance. I don't care if it's not tacky or is. I don't like the idea of, "hey, give us some money because we just got married".

I didn't define anyone by it. In fact, I suggested it might merely be a lapse in good taste. Try again.

Money dance for me has been an ethnic thing as well – at a WASP wedding typically no money dance but lots of envelopes w/ cash, at a eastern European or Italian wedding always a money dance (plus envelopes of cash), Ive nevr viewed it as trashy but more an ethnic thing. Just my 2 cents

Has nothing to do with me feeling better. OP asked a question and many responded that it was tasteless. It's the rationalizations posted by the money dancers that are the defense mechanisms used to make them feel better about their questionable choice.

You did, and this whole thread is doing it. No need to try anything, just stating an obvious fact.

I bet people around you take notice of how serious you take yourself and roll their eyes.

Newsflash: Having money and having class are not mutually inclusive.

Hell no. Especially in LA with the oil boom money a generation or two ago.

It's amazing how many wealthy people here are pretty trashy.

questionable choice.

Questional by whom? I didn't question it at all and would do it again if starting over.

Trashy isn't something I'm used to being called, but it sure wouldn't offend me. Just make me laugh.

Thankfully, I don't take things like that serious enough to care and I'm glad I get the opportunity to have a moment with the bride if she's a close friend or family to wish her luck in the marriage and to have a couple drinks on me during their honeymoon.

I don't think I've commented about myself beyond stating my belief that a money dance is tasteless. I don't take myself very seriously but, simply don't care to be viewed as someone with a hand out at an event I'm hosting.

Perhaps the money dances I've seen are different than what is being discussed here. The ones I've experienced is mainly for parents, aunts, uncles, the kids to be goofy, and siblings and funny friends/guests to dance guy/guy or girl/girl.

We got about $100 at ours, a lot of laughs, and a chance to dance with folks that we normally wouldn't have. It certainly wasn't a panhandling deal, though I'm sure I invited some loser who sat in the corner thinking it was while everyone else had a good time.

I feel the same way about you.
I"m not rationalizing anything, nor do i care if you approve or disapprove of this tradition. You're being ignorant. If it makes you feel good to look down on others having fun, have at it.

It's like you are the idiot Ole Miss fan that brings in catered food to your tailgate and has the chandelier hanging from your tent with real utensils and all, and you look down at us LSU fans for cooking a pig in our cajun microwave, drinking beer, and playing games b/c you think your so classy.

It isn't a "tradition" unless you are from one of these regions WIKI. Unless you come from one of those areas then it is just a bandwagon fad for trashy people .

Can we get a checklist of what is and isn't trashy/tasteless for a wedding?

I'd like to be able to determine the trashiness of my upcoming wedding.

Money dance vs no money dance

Open bar vs wine/beer only vs cash bar

Band vs DJ

Buffet/serve yourself vs sit down

Wedding favors vs no wedding favors

Throwing of garter/bouquet vs not

Anything I'm leaving out?
