I've never been to a wedding that had one. My friends have class.

Aren't those put on by a relative or friend of the woman? It's not the woman saying "give me a shower." If she does, she's trashy.

That's not what the money dance is for.

It's a chance for family and friends to dance with the bride or groom, have a moment alone with them to tell them something special, and then give them some extra money for the honeymoon.

If you think it's trashy, its B/c you have no idea what it's really about, or what people from south Louisiana are like.

Everything is trashy to someone. I don't spend my time worrying about it. I've been to weddings that had these dances and the participants had a lot of fun.

Money dances are fricking stupid but couples showers for people who have been living together for years are even worse. I ain't buying you some bullshite from Williams Sonoma when you already got a kitchenaid stand mixer

I've never really had a problem doing that with the bride and groom in a wedding in the past. I didn't have to bribe them. Granted I gave them some gift before the wedding, but they appreciated me coming down and didn't mind a dance or picture with me.

As you can tell from this thread, the people who have been to a wedding that had one understand it isn't trashy. The people who have never seen one must think the bride is out there grinding on a pole while the groom walks around hustling singles.

I didn't have one at mine, and neither did my brother, and I never thought I'd be here defending them, but this shite is getting ridiculous.

It isn't about class or trash, it is about money. If you have it, you don't do a money dance. If you don't have much of it and you're young, $40 and a few words of wisdom goes a lot farther than a fricking toaster oven.

Always just thought it was a South Louisiana/Cajun thing.

Most weddings in south Louisiana have a lot of people at them. Getting time with the bride or groom isn't always that easy.

The only memory I have of certain people at my wedding was during the money dance. Had I not danced with them, I wouldn't have known they were even there.

It has nothing to do with if you have money or not. It's a tradition, you give the couple a little extra spending money for their honeymoon B/c you want them to enjoy themselves and feel like you helped with giving them that enjoyment.

this is how it's always been presented when I've been to these weddings. It's no different than a shower, you're just giving the gift of a better honeymoon.

I've been to 4 South Louisiana weddings in my day. None had money dances, and none of them did I have major difficulty talking with the bride and groom.

And for frick's sake, mostly people in South Louisiana have big weddings? Really? I know that the world outside of South Louisiana can be a treacherous place for many people, but I can just about assure you that people from all over the nation have the biggest wedding they can afford or care to have. Big weddings are nothing unique to South Lousiana.

Or you could just still dance with people when the band is playing, like 98% of the nation does. I don't understand why treating the bride like a stripper is a necessary part of you meeting and dancing with people.

I mean seriously, there is no obligation to do any of it and it is only awkward if you let it be. I've been at weddings where it happened and I didn't participate because I just wasn't that close with the bride and groom, so a gift was a better option.

In the weddings where I did participate, I enjoyed the hell out of myself. If anything, I made it trashy because I gave my wife the cash for the groom and I was going to use a Visa gift card that had $50 on it, but I found out a few weeks later that the card I gave the bride was completely used.

I learned my lesson, and I've been brining completely used Visa gift cards and getting 15 seconds with the bride at every money dance since then.

C'mon, it isn't even close to this, especially now that most of it goes into a bag with the maid of honor or on the bride's wrist.

To be fair to his point, Catholics usually have big families. I don't, but my dad, his parents, all had 5-8 siblings. That starts turning into a huge fricking family.
