In hindsight, sure, but I didn’t. And I think you’re kind of missing the point.

Agreed. It’s on the “won’t go back” list for sure.

What's the success rate of restaurants in the US? Restaurant's are closing everywhere due to covid but people love to spin it as a nola problem.
It doesn’t really have much else.
Scruffy proposes that failing restaurants is a bigger issue for New Orleans than other major cities.

I’m soooooooo surprised to see it just lumped into the pandemic issue and not drive home the real issue. Make no mistake, the pandemic hit restaurants hard, but poor leadership (I’m looking at you, Teedy) has doubled down on stupid and is further crippling an already beleaguered group.
My wife made reservations and set up a sitter last weekend to surprise me with a little birthday dinner and a night out. We get to the restaurant and they ask for our vax cards (I genuinely disagree with this stance by the city, but I’m vaxed and wasn’t inclined to punish the restaurants for NOLA’s stupidity). My wife pulls hers up, all good, but LAwallet starts giving me issues and I can’t get mine pulled up. Gestapo says I can’t eat. I say “that’s fine”, get another Uber and head to JP for dinner. So now I’m less likely to even bother with NOLA’s bullshite next time we want to go grab a bite.
If the restauranteurs aren’t rioting in the street about this by now, they’re party to their own demise.
Mind sharing name of restaurant?

I'm going to say High Hat or another Adolfo restaurant

I honestly feel for those working in the restaurant industry now. However, I think this group closing shitty restaurants and concepts is more of an issue with crappy food, crappy atmosphere, crappy people, and crappy business models. I guarantee you I'm going to get a great meal and great service at Clancy's Thursday night, and I think they're doing just fine on the financial side. Stop blaming other causes for your own shortcomings.

How many other metros the size of NOLA are as dependent on Hospitality industry?
The man power is there and experienced in this line of work. They just don't have any reason to do so right now. Subsistence on tips and shitty wage + no benefit access or 401k isn't a desirable occupation when govt funds available.

Damn I loved Cavan. Had eaten there many times.
ETA: Just realized why I haven't been carded to go eat at a restaurant in NOLA. I haven't eaten at one at all. Just haven't had the desire to. If more people feel that way that probably isn't a good sign.

It’s not even the unemployment money.
People have just gotten to the point that tiny paychecks are just not worth the hassle.
I don’t have to agree with it but i see why.
A college student would have to work multiple jobs and attempt school just to make ends meet. That’s a miserable life for as long as college takes

This is easy, don’t open a restaurant in a liberal shithole.

I agree but not all restaurants are that strict. We went to Mr. Mao's and the hostess barely glanced at our phone. What restaurant did you go to?

Leadership is Problem #1
With that not changing, NO is in deep shite.

We — New Orleans, really — has a manpower issue.

I know a bunch of people who went to LA for the UCLA game and they never once got asked for vax card or to put a mask on at any establishment. They have the same rules as NOLA but Nola is crazy about it

“But more tell us they’re leaving New Orleans, leaving the industry. We — New Orleans, really — has a manpower issue.”
A family members restaurant uptown has been doing numbers 25% higher than 2019 throughout the pandemic. A Nola city councilmen called after the city received its Biden bucks asking how much of a check they needed for their losses and he told them to keep their money and that he only wanted the employees back.
City leaders are too ignorant to realize that the problem started with the continual fight to keep UE benefits going. They’re all wondering why there is a manpower shortage, but don’t want to blame themselves.

No, New Orleans has a Latoya issue.
I have several clients who own(ed) restaurants in New Orleans. Thanks to PPP they were going to survive. The cancellation of events and the vaccine mandate will end most of them.

This is why I'm just boycotting NOLA completely for now. As long as all this vaxx card/mask bullshite is going on, I'm over it. I can stay in JP, wear no mask and not have to produce my vaxx card. I'm vaxxed but vehemently against vaxx mandates, vaxx passports etc. From what I have heard, the vaxx card thing isn't really being enforced at every restaurant in NOLA. It's been more of a personal decision on the part of the restaurants themselves whether to enforce it. I refuse to go to any restaurant asking patrons to produce their vaxx card and I have zero sympathy for any restaurant struggling due to lack of workers if they were militant through this whole fiasco, being dicks about masks and being militant about vaxx proof. F them. I have a friend who owns a restaurant Uptown and he's liberal AF and militant about all that crap. I'm not eating at his place either as long as all of this stuff is going on.

I don't know how many restaurants were in New Orleans at the start of 2019, but I'd bet by next Summer, only half of them will remain.
And that's assuming NoLA starts having festivals again soon.

Let's all just 2nd line and party as they burn out. Ya know the New Orleans way to handle things.
