‘We Have a Manpower Issue' Top NOLA Restaurant Group Closes 3rd Restaurant in Under a Year

For the third time in under a year, New Orleans restaurateur Robért LeBlanc has announced the closure of one of his group’s popular restaurants, citing a calamitous combination of Hurricane Ida damage, a slower-than-ever slow season, and 18 months of an ongoing pandemic that’s left an entire industry “demoralized.”
LeBlanc owns Cavan’s building at 3607 Magazine Street by himself, which he says made it the “best option” of all the restaurants to close immediately. “We are understaffed and undercapitalized across the board, and if we tried to reopen everything at once, it wouldn’t work. [With] closing Cavan, it’s easier to take the hit myself than to ask others to take a hit,” LeBlanc said. The restaurant will continue to host the private events it was previously booked for over the coming months, he says, and he may reassess its future down the line.
Hurricane Ida exacerbated an already extreme set of challenges regarding staffing, LeBlanc says, because it’s prompted some people to relocate or not come back to town after evacuating. “Sales were already really down because of the delta spike and it being August. Then Ida hit, and it was just this realization for some people,” he says.
“We’ve had one or two people tell us they’re going to other restaurants,” LeBlanc says. “But more tell us they’re leaving New Orleans, leaving the industry. We — New Orleans, really — has a manpower issue.” LeBlanc and Smith’s full statement regarding the closure is below.

I mean, do something about it. Where’s the restaurant lobby? Where are the pickets? Defy these assholes and run your businesses. M
The government isn’t going to do shite for you if you’ve lost your business. Stop complaining to local media that’s fully complicit in these lockdowns and restrictions.

Was Cavan really that popular? It seemed to have a neighborhood following, but just another name in the sea of NoLa restaurants.
I know they spent a ton on the build out. Sucks either way. Hope he opens up a new spot there when people start traveling again.

It was always crowded when I went there.

Yeah, I was genuinely asking. I had not been there in several years, but I know people in the neighborhood who went regularly.

That place was mediocre and over priced. In a city of great food you won’t survive with mediocre.

Begging for federal bailout money.

It stayed pretty full. When I couldn't get in at Cavan I would go down to Lillete, which would have spots.
So not sure how you rate it.

The last few times I went they had removed some of my favorite items on the menu, and I wasn't a fan over the last year or so it was open.

When it was originally opened the owner wanted it to be a neighborhood place. Hence why the happy hour was what it was.
Sure he would have been happy being the talk of the town though. It seemed the chef turnover was high and sort of a stepping stone to other restaurants.

I’m soooooooo surprised to see it just lumped into the pandemic issue and not drive home the real issue. Make no mistake, the pandemic hit restaurants hard, but poor leadership (I’m looking at you, Teedy) has doubled down on stupid and is further crippling an already beleaguered group.
My wife made reservations and set up a sitter last weekend to surprise me with a little birthday dinner and a night out. We get to the restaurant and they ask for our vax cards (I genuinely disagree with this stance by the city, but I’m vaxed and wasn’t inclined to punish the restaurants for NOLA’s stupidity). My wife pulls hers up, all good, but LAwallet starts giving me issues and I can’t get mine pulled up. Gestapo says I can’t eat. I say “that’s fine”, get another Uber and head to JP for dinner. So now I’m less likely to even bother with NOLA’s bullshite next time we want to go grab a bite.
If the restauranteurs aren’t rioting in the street about this by now, they’re party to their own demise.

Lilette>>>>>>>>>>Cavan
I live near both of them and prefer Cavan. But it sucks to Hear. Robért is a great guy and has been in the restaurant game in Nola for a long time. He’s got a lot of great places. People like him need to be more vocal against Latoya but then you run the risk of her and her goons shutting down places or making up fines.

Any place that wouldn't just wink and nod, and let you in, deserves whatever horrible fate that may befall upon them.

Such a shitty take. This is a real problem, but because it doesn’t impact you immediately at this moment it’s not a big deal.
What's the success rate of restaurants in the US? Restaurant's are closing everywhere due to covid but people love to spin it as a nola problem.
