This is a college board. Most if not all were raised with higher standards than the people that can't read.
If you can't read, how are you supposed to read to your child?

Too many people on welfare.

This. We can't math well at all in this country anymore. This site loves to joke about 7 year notes at 10% interest. There are people out there who don't care about that and only the monthly payment. Its all about ignorance.

Two reasons
1. Creation of the department of education.
2. Abandoning rote learning for Reading, Writing and Arithmetic in elementary school and middle school.
Everyone should be taking Algebra in 9th grade, English Composition and Reading that's sole focus is comprehension.

Now I have a better understanding of Ranters.
Back in the day, my 3rd grade teacher attempted to fail me, said I couldn't read. I could read.
My Dad, who only had a 4th grade education, went to see the Principal. The Principal agreed to promote me to the fourth grade, for two six wk periods. If I passed, I would stay, if not I would go back to the third grade.
That summer I checked out and read numerous books off the Bookmobile, that ran past our county home.
The next school year, one of my teachers commented to the class. " I have
been reviewing class records and discovered "Roy" is here on a conditional contract. In fact he reads better than most of the class.
I was told by a High School teacher, my Sr year, that I was reading at a reading comprehension level at or above 80% of the nation.
Not bragging just showing what happens when parents get involved. Its a Parent and Administration problem. If my uneducated parents had not cared, or if my third grade teacher had not recognized that I need help.
That was at a Class "C" County school in North Louisiana.
I started first grade in 1948 and graduated in 1960.
My parents both had fourth grade education.

Obviously the education system is fricked beyond all recognition, but "reading on a 6th grade level" does not seem like an objective rating to me. Is a 6th grade level in 2026 the same as a 6th grade level in 1975?
The math I did in junior high was my parents high school math. I know this has reversed somewhat in some subjects due to DEI teaching curriculums tho
