re: We be in fact stupid and can’t read

I work next to a dude that legitimately can’t read. What’s crazy is 90% of our job is email based and he’s actually fairly successful.

By the way Mississippi went back to the 3 Rs and now they are talking about the Mississippi Miracle and their schools are ranted better than California and in top ten maybe ?

I was taught you read to your kids every night until they fall asleep. I read every night to mine from the kids in the treehouse to Harry Potter, etc. Both of mine are still active readers and real a few books a year.

I would love to see these numbers broken by social economic levels and race.

Speaking as a high school teacher, this is definitely the primary difference between a successful and unsuccessful student. It's extremely easy to tell.

But what has pretty much run public education into the ground is No Child Left Behind. When you tie federal funding to children's passing rates then all children are going to wind up passing, by hook or by crook. Which winds up with kids passing through elementary and middle school without learning much.

Once they get to high school they get held more accountable for the most part, but there is only so much a teacher can do in one year with someone who is 4-6 years behind in learning.

And even when a teacher like myself holds students accountable and fails them, they just wind up getting the credits in summer school or the ever popular credit recovery classes/programs, where they don't learn a thing. Only the students who actively refuse to try in any shape or form wind up not graduating, which results in a dumb population that can't read.

The only way to fix things is to go back to the basics at the lower levels and hold kids accountable. And this has to happen in conjunction with stopping the litigation happiness of suing schools and kids hiding behind IEPs to avoid being kicked out for bad behavior. Terrible kids need to be removed for good/average kids to be successful.

We already know what the problem is. It's the government's responsibility to raise and educate our children and even though the republicans have been in control at the State and Federal level for most of this century, somehow it's the democrat's fault.

If we had the republicans running things (which they are) we wouldn't have a problem with converting low I.Q. unmotivated lazy kids into rocket scientists.

Nathan Abshire, one of the founding fathers of Cajun music in here in Louisiana couldn’t spell his name. He worked in the local dump yard and loved what he did. This was not in the so distant past either.

Illiteracy is not new news sad to say, especially in the Deep South, but I agree, America is getting stupid.
