quote:

About 69.9% of public school teachers in the United States belong to a union or an employee association.

Those numbers seem off to me, at least in terms of Arizona they certainly are. I'm in an association, but that's only been the last couple years of a 15 year career. And the majority of the teachers I've work with aren't in one. But anyway:

quote:

Democrats: Approximately 58% of public school teachers identify as or lean Democratic.
• Republicans: Roughly 35% to 37% identify with or lean toward the Republican Party.

This is about the split I've experienced in teaching, 55-60% liberal, 40-45% conservative. Female teachers skewing the data more liberal.

quote:

How are they screwing educators over? Not enough pay? Do we reward failing our children?

Your attitude here is kinda an example of the trickle down effect that doesn't fit on a micro level. I'm a high school anatomy teacher, I have no control of literacy rates, how are you going to manage any sort of pay structures for me for something I actually have any control of?

But before you can judge any teachers results you have to make it so the students have skin in the game, because none of your data from any state run test is going to be accurate because students simply don't care about them.

I don't have time to list the amount of stuff AZ Republican legislators have done to screw public education since I've been here. But one easy one is a teacher raise amendment was passed at the state level with over 65% approval at the ballot, and the Governor at the time refused to pay it after. He had to be sued in federal court in order to follow the law (which should be pretty basic).

I once road a "Shuttle Van" to work, while working in North Mississippi.
There was an ex Elementary School Teacher, about thirty years old, who had quit teaching, started work for TVA at the construction of the Yellow Creek Nuclear plant. One morning the discussion turned to schools and education. The ex teacher stated that children were too immature to learn to read until about seven years old.
I told him that I had obtained a first grade Primer and had taught my two Sons to read when they were five year old. I said neither me nor my wife are brilliant so I suspect their intellect is sorta mid range.

Later that day, I passed the "Teacher" in the Hall, and he stopped to talk. He said, "You really made me mad this morning". I was surprised, and asked, what about? He said "when you disagreed with my assertion, as a professional, that most children are too immature to learn to read at age 6. Then I realized that you are an uneducated person on the subject of child education. So I forgave you."

It appears that Mississippi Education Dept. is under new management. I applaud them. Even the Tennessee Governor candidates are using Mississippi as a positive example.
