I always thought the same thing, I guess liability issues. How about just hire one or two legit security people.

They do have contractors for this exact scenario. I believe I read where Capt. Phillips went off course to save time. Their original chart wasn’t supposed to go so close to shore, so Maersk didn’t supply security for the ship.

The general thought before the Maersk Alabama hijack was that the pirates could be thwarted with the water cannons and their captain’s experience at sea. Most have 3rd party private, armed security now.

Prior to that incident, and even today, sea going personnel were VERY anti-gun on board their vessels for some reason. I know guys who do on-board security work and they say some captains loathe having them on board. Some code of the sea BS or something.

Cheap companies not wanting to pay for armed security contractors on board. After that incident they basically all started paying for hired guns on board and those pirates started getting their dicks fricked

Basically this.
You dont hear about pirates that much anymore because they've been killing them like hotcakes for years. They just dont advertise it
