When I watch it I feel that Somalis are the most physically repulsive people on planet Earth. Whenever I see a Somali I feel like I need to take a shower. So sketchy looking.

Agreed although I don't think the countries producing pirates are privy to youtube. They're mostly concerned if their mud hut is going to survive the next storm and where their next meal is going to come from.

I'll enjoy the footage on youtube though. It just won't act as a deterrent to pirates in training.

I was less than a mile away from a BB that unleashed a salvo in the 80s..... I've seen some impressive sights in my life....and that right there was near the top.... the sound and reverberations were unreal.... smoke rings too....

Water cannons are for keeping them from boarding, aiming, swamping their boat.

Its not some fun park squirt in the face.

Maersk they managed to get aboard despite having been swamped by the ship itself.

Maersk is only notable for having an American ship boarded. Other than that the pirates were fricked from the approach and we're constantly hopping from frying pan to frying pan.

quote:

The crew members of Maersk Alabama had received anti-piracy training from union training schools, and had drilled aboard the ship a day previously. Their training included the use of small arms, anti-terror, basic safety, first aid, and other security-related courses.[7][8] When the pirate alarm sounded early on 8 April, Chief Engineer Mike Perry brought 14 members of the crew into a "secure room" that the engineers had been in the process of fortifying for just such a purpose. As the pirates approached, the remaining crew fired flares. In addition, Perry and 1st A/E (Assistant Engineer) Matt Fisher swung the ship's rudder, which swamped the pirate skiff.[9]

Nonetheless, the ship was boarded. Perry had initially taken main engine control away from the bridge and 1st A/E Matt Fisher had taken control of the steering gear. Perry then shut down all ship systems and the entire vessel "went black." The pirates captured Captain Richard Phillips and several other crew members minutes after boarding, but soon found that they could not control the ship.

Perry remained outside the secure room lying in wait, knife in hand, for a visit from the pirates who were trying to locate the missing crew members in order to gain control of the ship and presumably sail it to Somalia. Perry tackled the ringleader of the pirates and took him prisoner after a cat-and-mouse chase in a darkened engine room. Pirate ringleader Abduwali Muse cut his hand trying to keep Perry's knife away from his neck. The pirate was then tied up and his wounds were treated by Second Mate Ken Quinn.[10]

Later, after suffering in the overheated secure room for hours, the crew attempted to exchange the pirate whom they had captured[11] for the captain, but the exchange went awry and the pirates refused to honor the agreement after the crew released their captive. Captain Phillips escorted the pirates to a lifeboat to show them how to operate it, but then the pirates fled in the lifeboat with Phillips as a hostage.[12]

That’s great information and makes sense. I worked in shipping mid 1990’s and some of those captains were tough stuff. One captain got pissed at me because I would remove my hard hat in the presence of the Queen. I removed it, I was shocked that he through a little fit.

Mark wasn’t an angel but there was a lot about that story that didn’t make sense. There are other Anglo sailors who died under the same dubious circumstances in the Seychelles in the same time frame.

You are in international waters. As long as you operate within the boundaries of maritime law, you are well within your rights to shoot pirates at will.

These boats are not in international waters 100% of the time. How do you think they pick up or drop off goods? Just toss them overboard once they get to the border with the jurisdiction waters of the goods destination?

To a small boat, water cannons would be destructive.

I still think an RPG is a better idea.

Think about others who come through this area and save them the irritation of those same pirates attacking them.

I'm sure the company has a strict no firearm policy to prevent gun violence. As you see, the bad guys DGAF about laws. The policy put these lives in danger.
