Having guns on board the ships prohibits them from entering many foreign ports of call is the reason many do not carry armed security.

always thought the same thing, I guess liability issues. How about just hire one or two legit security people.

Because they enter ports in other countries and its illegal to bring guns in.

That’s what they want you to think. My BIL did some contract work around 2010 and said these attempted hijackings happen more than than you hear about. Shoot the boat to pieces and keep moving.

I'm not sure, but the scene where he is being checked over by the med is almost too real. Amazing acting my Tom Hanks in that scene.

I heard a podcast about this once, and the capitain speaking said, lots of ports won't allow ships to dock if there are guns aboard. Others will only allow docking if the guns are in a lock box.

would you want to be involved in shooting some local pirate in some shite hole country? they are going to toss your arse in jail and its going to be a mess and painful experience for the person who shoots the gun. all countries arent as open to people having guns as the US.

I will qualify this and say if i was on one of these boats I would want a gun

You are in international waters. As long as you operate within the boundaries of maritime law, you are well within your rights to shoot pirates at will.

There was a Navy SEAL from Central who died aboard the Maersk Alabama while doing contract work. Actually he and another SEAL died. So apparently they started hiring the big guns.

The general thought before the Maersk Alabama hijack was that the pirates could be thwarted with the water cannons and their captain’s experience at sea. Most have 3rd party private, armed security now.

There are some you tube videos of some of this at work.

Their deaths had little to do with pirates though
