Where I live, I see copperheads once in awhile, but black widows are everywhere. A couple of months ago, I replaced an old 6’ treated pine fence around my pool area and I stacked the old fence boards by my shed, to dispose of later. Went out there Saturday to get rid of the boards and found a couple of black widows had setup shop in the pile. They’re just as venomous as a copperhead and will leave a nasty reminder of that if bitten.

Pretty sure both the "average bill is 150k" and the "insurance won't cover" are both falsehoods driven by a couple of recent outlier stories

Although venomous, these snakes are generally not aggressive and bites are rarely fatal. Copperhead venom has an estimated lethal dose around 100 mg, and tests on mice show its potency is among the lowest of all pit vipers, and slightly weaker than that of its close relative, the cottonmouth. Copperheads often employ a "warning bite" when stepped on or agitated and inject a relatively small amount of venom, if any at all. "Dry bites" involving no venom are particularly common with the copperhead, though all pit vipers are capable of a dry bite.

The OB will get their panties in a wad over it but if there's a venomous snake near my house that bitch is dying. Humans are the dominant species in the food chain and a snake is in my territory. He's dead.

The good news is that copperheads don’t move around much during the hottest parts of the day.
The bad news is that I usually encounter them when I’m doing something like taking the trash out at 9:00 at night and nearly step on one while wearing Crocs. Then it slithers into the shadows, and makes an escape before I can grab a weapon.

The problem is that people can't tell the difference between a venomous snake and a little brown snake or water snake. I see people freak out over a snake barely bigger than a worm

The antivenom alone is $85,000 insane

Took place beside my patio yesterday.

The sound a frog makes when it’s leg is in a snakes mouth is surprising. Not a sound I would think a frog could make. I always free them when I see it, even though I have no love for frogs.

Antivenom is like $4-500 a vial. Outside of the coral snake, everything here is a pit viper and they use the same antivenon to treat it. My dog got got by a 5+ footer to the head about 15 years ago. My bill was around 3000-3500. Suffered bad necrosis at the bite site, but lived another dozen years after the fact. Didn't lose the eye, but lost vision. Wish we had a hyperbaric chamber for pets back then to try an minimize the necrosis damage. Electro stim was not as effective as I had hoped.

200 people die everyday from snakebites worldwide
5 die a year in the US
Just thought that was a crazy statistic

There is no real reason not to eradicate venomous snakes. The people that say otherwise are full of shite. Hawaii did and maybe they have a few extra mongooses, other than that no real harm to the ecosystem. It will adapt just fine.

I'd take a copperhead over a cottonmouth all day.

Yeah. I think I would too. They are extremely aggressive.
