Was Pablo Escobar the most feared modern day gangster?

Watching Narcos and never realized the money and power Pablo had going compared to other notorious cartels. Even Chapo pales in comparison to peak net worth.
Also, I realize the war on drugs were around that time but crazy how invested the US was in such a shithole country.

That Mexican police chief, El Negro, with the abandoned castle is up there too.

The Parthenon of El Negro: An Abandoned Corrupt Cop's Mansion. Mexico has many amazing abandoned sites, but none have a story quite like this. Arturo Durazo Moreno, also known as "El Negro", was the Chief of Police in Mexico City from 1976 to 1982.
quote:
When El Negro had dinner parties, attendees often went missing, and it was rumoured that the crazed police chief worshipped the devil and kept prisoners hostage, only to release them if they survived a fight with one of his tigers. The palace’s murals pretty much speak for his state of mind…
quote:
El Negro was known to give out machine guns as gifts and police badges as souvenirs. He practically turned the police headquarters into his own brothel, inviting prostitutes to his offices that were specially equipped with secret passageways for when the Mrs dropped by unexpectedly.
When a gang of Colombian bank robbers began targeting Mexico City, it wasn’t long before El Negro struck a deal with them, allowing the thieves to continue their activities as long as he got a significant share of the loot. When their relationship became too troublesome for the Police Chief, he had them all tortured, murdered and dumped into the sewers.

If I were in the criminal underworld, I'd be very uneasy being pals with Pablo. Dude was legit sadistic.

US didn’t hate Pablo for a while because he was so powerful he squashed competitors.
He also did a lot to clean up and improve his communities.
But he was a vicious, psychotic, power hungry, paranoid, murderer.

I’m always conflicted on how to feel about him going down.
He was one evil MF, but ge also had so much power that cartel wars basically didn’t exist. We took down the Medellín cartel and Latin America has been a shitshow ever since.

Pablo overstepped eventually, we had to get involved.

I think what separated Pablo from other gangsters was the fear he was able to instill in politicians and government figures.
Anyone who wasn't getting paid off by him and made even the slightest criticism of the narco-state knew their days were likely numbered.
The Colombian government had to basically turn to guerillas and mercenaries who didn't really care about Colombia's image to fight the cartels.

Isn't there a fact out there (or just a myth?) that he spent something like 5 or 6 figures a month solely on rubber bands used to brick his money? I remember something like that years ago.

Now do Saddam and Iraq / Iran. Elected idiots in DC would do well to quit fiddling around in international affairs and worry more about fixing our domestic issues.

Didn't he start bombing buildings? Dude became unhinged and had to be put down.

The US government loves to create power vacuums in the unstable, violent regions of the world. It’s kind of our thing.

I would hate to be on that security detail.

Hey, I keep hearing that police morale is low. Maybe he was on to something.
