VW storing nearly 300K cheating diesels around US at facilities like Silverdome

LINK

According to court documents seen by Reuters, Volkswagen is storing nearly 300,000 vehicles around the United States at cheating diesel graveyards such as the Pontiac Silverdome.

These vehicles are part of the $25 billion VW has agreed to spend on claims for affected owners, individual states, dealerships and federal environmental regulators in the U.S. The automaker is believed to have other "regional storage facilities" at the decommissioned Norton Air Force Base in California, the Port of Baltimore, a former paper mill in Minnesota and the Silverdome in Pontiac.

Reuters reports that Volkswagen has 37 regional storage facilities across the country. In September 2017, an Indiana State Trooper said it was believed that at least 60 of those vehicles were stolen from the Silverdome, given fraudulent Vehicle Identification Numbers and sold to auction companies in Indiana and Kentucky.

VW has admitted to using software, known as a defeat device, in the 2009-2015 Audi A3 and the Volkswagen Beetle, Golf, Jetta and Passat TDI cars with 2.0-liter diesel engines to trick emissions tests. About 482,000 were sold in the U.S., and another 11 million around the world.

The VW cars with 2-liter diesels would meet emissions standards tests in a laboratory or testing station, but in normal operation, they emit nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times the standard, according to the EPA. The company also admitted to using the software in some of its vehicles with 3.0-liter diesel engines.

I'd take one at a deep discount as a daily driver.

I'd like to know the emissions-compliant vs non mpg. I know my old truck doubled when I ditched the emissions stuff

All the emissions equipment cause horrible fuel mileage on a diesel. It's sad really

This makes sense. I passed one of these yards between Colorado Springs and Pueblo near the PPIR race track. I was like wtf is this all about?

Oh the horror! A well made car that doesn’t meet arbitrary standards!

I want to get me one of them. Emissions systems are a racket.

Well made? Eh. But I can buy and drive a 1970 Beetle legally, and I bet it's orders of magnitude dirtier than any of the diesels on those giant lots.

I tried to deal with a couple big dealers when they first implemented the program where you could buy one w a "fix." You'd have thought they were selling vintage Porsches. They basically wanted brand new pircing--the advertised discount was off of original MSRP and definitely not worth it.

That's because that's what they had to pay me to buy it back . Had one and sold it back a little over a year ago. It was 5 years old and they paid me 4k less than what I paid for it with 100k miles on it. Told me all the vehicles were basically being parked. If they had a fix (which I don't even know if they ever released), they would do that and sell. If not, parts and scrap. Couldn't even sell it to another country where it met their standards. Was part of the deal with the government.......what a waste. I loved the mileage in that car. Easily averaged 42 mpg.

Yeah had a couple of friends do that.

My other issue besides price is, in addition to the initial computer fix, they said you'd have to bring it back at some undetermined later date for a part. No thanks.

My 2014 was routinely getting 52mpg on my commute. I could get almost 60 if I tried to.

It really pisses me off that I had to get rid of that car. It was the perfect commuter car. 130k trouble free miles at well over 50mpg. It was only $20k brand new and was far nicer than any other economy car out there.

dumb question, but if you loved the car & mpg, couldn't you just leave it 'as is' and continue to drive it?

was the 'buy back' just too good of a deal to pass up?

in other words, they couldn't *FORCE* you to take a computer update and frick up your MPG right? can they 'big brother' a working 50mpg car and drop it down to 'emissions friendly' mode?

whats the harm in continuing to drive it? would the government come after you?
