Well if you bring it to a dealership they're going to fix it. It will be mandatory for them to fix it at no cost to the customer.
It depends how hard the EPA wants to play this. They could start denying inspections or fine the owner of the vehicle for not bringing it in for an update within a given time span.

I know KBB isn't the best site for auto values, but I checked the value of our TDI 2 months ago and it was approx $16,500.

Mutha freaker. Ok if I get my mileage taken away I want my $ back. WTF. I get between 43-50 mpg that's why I bought the thing. If not I would have gotten a truck.

As of right now the only affected vehicles are 2009-current cars with the 2.0L diesel, code named EA288. Your V6 diesel could very well be guilty of these same issues since it is an in-house designed engine, but for now the 4-pot is the only motor that's for sure guilty of this. Audi and Porsche are under investigation with regard to this as we speak.

For those wondering like I was, the EPA amended their notice to include 2012 - present TDI passats. It is on their website.

I passed inspection in Texas today, so they haven't started anything about it yet (didn't expect them to). Gives me a year to have to deal with this I think.

That's what I don't get about diesels in the US. It must not create much pollution producing diesel, because mileage on vehicles that run it is basically dropped by 30-50% with all of the emissions stuff tacked on
Use less fuel = less pollution
Use more fuel = costly to get same results

I'm going to start looking soon for a used Jetta or Golf TDI. Should be able to pick one up for cheap.

EPA is big business. Screw your gas mileage, if they can make a profit on it. I heard a story (15 years ago) that U.C. Berkley, the most liberal college around did a study on gas additives. They found that when they removed certain additives that the government makes Big Oil put into their gas that it reduced pollution and increased gas mileage. That study got hushed up quick. I wonder, why is that?

VW is currently the only known company to have programmed a cheat to their cars. This is an indictment on VW, not the concept of a diesel engine. Chevy, Ford, Mercedes, Cummins, and Detroit diesel offer engines that actually do meet these draconian regulatory requirements.
Their competitors offer the more expensive, less efficient diesel setup to meet regulatory requirements or have chosen to not offer diesels at all.
So VW defrauded consumers, lied to many governments, and cheated to get a unfair competitive edge. They were not innovative with diesels like we thought they were.
They deserve massive penalties and fines, and the people who bought these cars that will have to be recalled should be made whole.

I can only hope, but I'll believe it when I see it. Right now the car is essentially worthless.

The rules may be stupid, but in intentionally not following them, VW lied to their consumers and cheated to gain a competitive edge in Diesel engines over Toyota, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, etc.

It will ultimately get bought back or you'll be unable to get it inspected until VW comes up with a fix....which will probably negatively impact engine performance, efficiency, and reliability.
