They lied about the emissions of those engines. They actually get better fuel mileage than advertised. Mine was stickered at (I thjnk) 48mpg highway and actually gets 50+

Mine was advertised at 39 and I have gotten north of 45 mpg. That has declined over the 4 years I have had it though.

VW stock was $160 before the open yesterday.

No way am I getting the emissions fix to my TDI. I don't want to lose any performance or mileage. But I only have a year left on my lease so I should be able to avoid it, turn the car in, and let it be VW's problem.

It's an emissions thing AND a real-world mpgs thing. They set up the computer so that the engine would run on one "tune" when being emissions-tested and another when being driven. The tune it runs on during emissions testing would provide less performance and worse MPG than the tune designed for driving. If the "fix" is to use the emissions testing tune all the time in order to meet emissions standards, the buyers will be stuck with cars will get worse than advertised performance and worse than advertised mileage. As they are right now on the "driving" tune, they actually do better than advertised.

I estimate I lost about 4-5 thousand in value in my car over the weekend. Pretty sure thats the end of the world

It's just annoying to lose that much value from pure deception to the consumer. I do feel VW owes me something if it came to that. Otherwise, I'm going to keep on keepin on with my 42 mpg.

Where are all the TDI Audis on the list? Not the same engines? We have a TDI Q7 and am just wondering about this. Not really concerned since it's a lease though.

This whole thing really makes me glad I held off on buying a new car.

Everyone should hold off on these new light diesels for a while. The new EPA regs have made it very difficult to develop a light diesel that meets the standards and I wouldn't be surprised if this was going on with other manufacturers.
I'm not a Ford fanboy - I've never owned one - but I've gotta say that the EcoBoost move was brilliant. Ford looked at the situation with the EPA cracking down on diesels, noticed it was resulting in diesels having to have to run all of this complex smog equipment, and they said "No thanks, we'll make a gas motor with a lot of diesel principles and not deal with DPF, EGR, DEF, etc."

Wait until someone has to work on the Rube Goldberg-designed EcoBoost.

That was my initial reaction to them, but they've been around since 2010, so it stands to reason that if there were big reliability or maintenance issues waiting in the wings they'd've happened by now.

It doesnt even affect all diesel VWs. Only that particular size engine, which is in the audi a4 I believe.

The loss in value and inevitable forced canned tune are what bother me.
I want to know how this will play out. If Volkswagen will give dealerships an incentive to offer fair trade in value on these cars we won't make out that bad. I had no intentions on trading it in until it fell apart, but if I could get pre-SHTF trade in for it, I'd be happy enough with that I guess. I'd be loosing my arse though

There will be.
The build quality is very good (of all domestic trucks) however eventually poor maintenance and sheer reps will get the numerous components.
And they (used EcoBoosts) will be a marked truck for the issues.

How will owners be forced to fix it? Deny a break tag or license renewal perhaps?
