Yup, same here. Some of my earliest memories are of me sitting in religion class or church looking around thinking "do all these adults really believe this?" If I would have know what bullshite was, that's wat I would have called it. Later in life I tried like hell to believe, because I needed something to believe in due to tragedies in my life, and I still couldn't do it.

However, saying that god does not willingly allow the deaths of innocents, or that the grief and strife left in the wake of their death is all part of some "plan" is not comforting in the least, to anyone.

So are you more comforted by the thought that tragedy is random? That your life can be humming along just fine, then by random chance it is snuffed out and that's the end of the line for eternity? Does that thought bring you peace?

Would it make it better if tragedy was planned?

Yes, from my perspective, the fact that bad things can happen to good people due to random chance is a far better situation in which to live than assuming we're all pieces on a board being played by a being who decides who faces tragedies and who does not. Having to answer the "whys" of that system is how you get such responses such as "mysterious ways" for legitimate questions.

You come to terms with it, because it's likely the truth. Believing something because it gives you peace, rather than because you believe it to be true, has never made any sense to me.

Actually yes. Makes it impersonal. Better than believing that the MS13 member who is busy stabbing you to death is doing it because of some master scheme by an almighty that created you only to be stabbed to death at the end.

Or what about believing that god allowed you to conceive, gestate and bear a child, only to have them stricken with brain cancer at age 2 and die. Part. Of. The. Plan? Yeah I don't wanna be with that plan personally. Also don't wanna hear that it is free will and "evil" that causes those things. If I was taught right in 14 years of Catholic indoctrination, God is omnipresent and all powerful. If he did not allow suffering, it would not exist. If he did not create evil, he sure as frick made a ton of room for it on the tableau he calls "the universe".

While never completely suicidal, the thought of not ever existing or ceasing to exist was a very comforting thought over the years. I deal with clinical depression and have 3 family members that killed themselves, one who drank himself to death and one who is on the way.

If Yahweh actually exists, he's a giant dickhead. No one asked to be here, yet if we don't follow his rules, we go to eternal torture.

But in all actuality, the chances that one group got it "right" in regards to the existence and nature of God is so small that I'll take my chances.

At some point the answers to questions like this do just sound like random chance reworded. If in the end good things happened to bad people, bad things happened to good people, and sometimes karma seemed to actually work and prayers for healing are answered positively sometimes and negatively others, etc...and yet you still ascribe it all to the creator's plan, what you're describing is randomness. It's just that you've decided to add the creator where one is not needed in order to get the machine up and running. It seems an unnecessary step to me.

Greek Orthodox Church? I assume John Georges will buy the portrait and turn it into a rag just like his other well publicized purchases.

It does actually.

Our entire existence is because of randomness.

Ah, the "God doesn't do things the way I would so He doesn't exist" argument. How is that proof He doesn't exist again? I forget the logic and science of that argument.

It truly saddens me that I live in a world where multitudes of my fellow humans buy into this shite and shite like it. It reminds me that we will always live in a world ruled by overlords and their made up bullshite.

The Abrahamic faiths are the worst thing that has ever happened to humanity.

Actually, 20th century atheism has been far worse for humanity. The body count proves it.
