Long post, but yes, I assumed by "portable" most would know I really wasn't referring to CDs.
I'm old school and have been inside recording studios and attended recording sessions, but I am certainly not a sound engineer.
I'm not all that into the hardware, although I have a pretty good set of speakers.
I think it is fair to say that the majority of streamed music (including sat radio) is inferior in sound quality to CDs and vinyl, but most folks probably don't care all that much, and really aren't that concerned about it.
To me though, it is like looking at videotape as compared to film.

Yep. When you are 15 six CDs for $2.99 sounds incredible. You don't really give a shite about those 4 you have to buy at double price yet

New cars not having CD players has to be a big part of the reason here

I bought Mellon collie and the infinite sadness in 1995 when it came out and gave $35
That was a 2 CD set and would have been 4-5 12" records. Great album BTW.
I have paid over $100 for a handful of CDs mainly rare imports with particularly good recordings and engineering of artists like Jimi Hendrix. I have a fairly close to complete collection of his full discography. There is still a lot of Jimi's vinyl I would like to have but most of those are vintage 60's stuff pressed from 16 track masters and you most definitely pay for the rarity and condition.

When you buy warrant and winger you have no one to blame but yourself.

That post jogged my memory I think the most I ever paid for CD's was a box set of Danzig-era Misfits. I think I paid $70 or so dollars for four CDs which is crazy to even consider these days.

Bobbie Brown is from my little hometown

Hence being stuck with bullshite if you forgot. It was their entire business model.

For those who say you can't hear the difference between LP's and CD's I'll say this....
Back in the late 80'S I was in a Hi-Fi shop just outside of London comparing two systems I was thinking of buying.
System 1 -Cambridge CD player, DAC, Krell monobocks connected to top of the line B&W 801's.
System 2 Rega turntable, Bryston Preamp, Bryston amps going to Magnaplanar speakers
Both systems were absolutely fantastic
The difference....with my eyes closed I could hear all/most of the instruments on the CD based system
With the vinyl set-up I cold not only hear every instrument, but I could tell you almost exactly where they were positioned in the room. Most uncanny yet amazing musical experience I have ever had the pleasure to hear.
(unless you count a hummer I got from an Aussie nurse during my wordly travels)

My wife got me a fantastic vinyl setup last year and it’s incredible. Listening to blues on that thing just sounds right.

Listen to Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures on Vinyl and CD.
That will tell you all you need to know.

I was always able to listen to my CDs on the go. In the car and with a portable player.
Some streaming services offer higher quality streams. Qobuz offers 24bit 192kHz FLAC but it is pricey. Tidal offers lossless streaming but isn't one of the leaders.

So you were listening to a CD encoded with 80s technology? Likely something recorded analog then mastered with then state of the art tech for digital.
Or not, who knows? Maybe they just took the analog master and encoded that with what would now be considered inferior gear. int he 80s, they were still figuring it all out and different people might cut corners and not pay to have something mastered properly for CD. That is if you were even playing the same recording, you post doesn't indicate if it was the same album played via different formats.
