Been saying it for 10 years, if not more. This isn’t a surprise. It was the next logical step in mental illness acceptance. First transgenders, now pedos.

But in this case they're acknowledging that it's a mental illness

That's a dumb interpretation of what the article is actually arguing. It's not seeking to do anything for pedophiles who have engaged in the act, it's seeking to deal with individuals who have the urges but haven't acted on it in a way that would actually prevent them from acting on it rather than punishing them after the fact.

Whether you agree with the general point of the article or not, it's dishonest to say it's seeking to promote the act. It's advocating that there is a way to reduce the actual number of victims. Wouldn't we all prefer that kids never be molested over the alternative that they get molested and then we get retribution? Now if your position is to disagree with the Vice article because you think it's a foolish move and you'll be providing a safe-haven for pedos by reducing the reporting requirements, you have a valid intellectual argument. But to make the claim about the position of the article that your link takes is clickbait bullshite.

I know some will disagree but I think even pretty serious leftists are uncomfortable in "normalizing" pedophilia. But, I would argue the goal isn't about promoting any particular lifestyle/vice, it's about undermining cultural values and norms, and not fricking with children is a pretty huge one.

One would think that it would be counterproductive to move into this territory, but I can't really rationalize the purpose/value behind celebrating 7 year olds transitioning, minor children dancing at gay men's clubs or weird crossdressers reading books to small children. So maybe it's going to get to that point after all.

While I agree for an offending pedophile but the whole point here is having an avenue for the ones that are trying NOT to act to get treatment. In a very broad way it is like PTSD in the military. I knew guys that were certainly suffering and potential timebombs but seeking treatment could and often did end their careers. This just leads to many avoiding treatment and exploding at some point.

In the end making it easier for pedophiles to seek and receive treatment is a good thing for society.

They aren't trying to get anyone to 'accept' pedos. They're trying to get pedos to make the decision to get help instead of making the decision to rape kids.

I don't expect pedos to kill themselves or turn themselves in for some kind of execution, but I for sure support them getting therapy or castration!

I read the underlying VICE article, which basically presents the issue as a US doesn't have much of a treatment option vs. other places where they do. It's somewhat sympathetic to a German (I think) program which talks about destigmatizing (something I bristle at like everyone else) - but even in doing so it's talking specifically about non-offending pedophiles and how chemical castration is one of the options. What I hate is that the VICE piece is actually interesting, even if some will read it and be annoyed by the tone or otherwise disagree. I think that's reasonable. But then you have these third parties like The Blaze, which comes from a general viewpoint I agree with, and they just want conservatives to think some elitists in Germany are promoting the normalization of pedophilia and will feed you that conclusion so you don't even bother with the article itself (which is worth reading/thinking about).

Solid post man.

If more people communicated like this in 2019 we’d be infinitely better off.

Adults having sex with prepubescent children will never be normalized no matter how many times you snowflakes say it will.

Soooo you’d rather mentally ill people be discouraged by law from seeking help, therefore making them more likely to act on their horrific urges?

I am in both camps.

If they truly have not crossed the line, I hope they get effective treatment to prevent any child from being harmed. Once they do cross the line, however, punishment should be severe and non-negotiable. To me, these are not mutually exclusive concepts.

What I don't want to see happen (and what I fear is inevitable) is some absolving of personal responsibility by painting pedophiles in a progressively sympathetic light.

So you agree with the system of laws we have in place for literally everything, including pedophiles. Good to hear.

No one outside of conservative fear mongering is doing this for those who act on their urges.

There's nothing wrong with feeling bad for someone who does have the urges. It's not like they chose it or want it. I'd probably kill myself if I were in that position.

I don't think it's what's being done here at all but to say this is bullshite. There have already existed societies in which it was accepted. It's ludicrous to say it absolutely can never be that way again.

This just seems so obvious. These wretched souls are cursed to have as their "thing" the one thing that nearly everyone agrees is not OK. I'm betting that many of them would volunteer for chemical castration if they knew they could do it without having it be front page news.

I normally disagree with you on everything but agree the take of the article is that it’s hard for people to seek help.

I’m fortunate that my taste for curvy brunettes with big boobs is socially acceptable. At best I’m just a horn dog and at worst I’m an adulterer for pursuing them. People can get over that, as we just elected a guy that did that and second place was a wife that excused her husband doing the same thing.

There is a portion of the pedophile population that wants help but is scared of coming forward and I feel for them.

I don't think anyone, including that Vice article, is arguing that these are mutually exclusive concepts. I don't think these are even 2 separate camps. I would suggest the opposite--that these positions go hand-in-hand just like how we treat any other criminals.

1. We should maximize our capacity to identify and treat those with defects that signal a tendency to commit heinous acts because our goal is to pragmatically minimize the commission of such heinous acts. 2. When #1 fails, we should punish the actors both as a form of retribution and as a deterrent to others.

I don't see that as inevitable at all, but we can agree to disagree there.
