quote:

The article laments the plight of pedophiles in the United States who are afraid to seek treatment because of "mandatory reporting laws that require therapists to report people they deem a risk to children to the police." "Even if you've never offended, if you are sexually interested in children and you reach out to a therapist for help, they may decide that you still represent a threat," Elizabeth Letourneau, director of the Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse, told Vice. "And that their concerns meet the threshold for a mandatory report."

quote:

The article goes on to argue that pedophilia should be "destigmatized." "[I]t would be very, very inhuman to judge such a person," said Berlin's "Project Dunkelfeld" creator Dr. Klaus Beier.

I agree, remove the stigma ... and proceed directly to making them firing range targets.

Shocker! People have been saying for a while once mental illness for transgenders was “normalized” pedos would be next

ETA: i guess the OT has 14 trans or pedo posters

This comes up every year and it's not very productive.

The reality is that there are people who inherently have pedophilia feelings/urges. It's probably worth discussing how we can best get some of those people in treatment/institutions instead of having them live in the shadows and do who knows what.

I know we'd mostly prefer that they all just be dispatched from the planet, but in 2019 it's just not going to happen. So while I have no idea if the VICE article is gross or not, The Blaze jumping in to act like any discussion on the realities of this stuff is evil probably isn't helpful and probably just seeks outraged clicks.

'Destigmatize' is absolutely the wrong word to use, but other than that, what's wrong with making it easier for pedophiles to turn themselves in and be given some sort of treatment to prevent them from raping children?

EDIT: @Pettifogger

Other than the distasteful use of the phrase "destigmatize pedophilia" the article was about nothing more than making pedos more comfortable turning themselves into their shrinks so they can get treatment preventing them from raping children. The article was not about defending the act of raping children.

This just seems so obvious. These wretched souls are cursed to have as their "thing" the one thing that nearly everyone agrees is not OK. I'm betting that many of them would volunteer for chemical castration if they knew they could do it without having it be front page news.

Agreed. They need to be able to seek help and go through chemical castration

I have no problem with the statements made in that first paragraph.

These people should get mental help, especially if they have never actually acted on their urges.

Once’s they have acted on them, feel free to eliminate them from society.

This is kind of a misleading title by BlazeTV. The original article/interviewed talked about nonoffenders which unfortunately is a real thing that we have to deal with. I don't necessarily believe that we should feel bad for individuals with this problem. But I would rather know they exist than not know at all.

I read the underlying VICE article, which basically presents the issue as a US doesn't have much of a treatment option vs. other places where they do.

It's somewhat sympathetic to a German (I think) program which talks about destigmatizing (something I bristle at like everyone else) - but even in doing so it's talking specifically about non-offending pedophiles and how chemical castration is one of the options.

What I hate is that the VICE piece is actually interesting, even if some will read it and be annoyed by the tone or otherwise disagree. I think that's reasonable. But then you have these third parties like The Blaze, which comes from a general viewpoint I agree with, and they just want conservatives to think some elitists in Germany are promoting the normalization of pedophilia and will feed you that conclusion so you don't even bother with the article itself (which is worth reading/thinking about).

Pedophiles don't need de-stigmatizing, they need either killing or neutering. Or both.

Good post and I agree. There have been a few threads on this in the past but they usually just devolve into posters competing at coming up with the most elaborate ways to kill them. I realize that this is an extremely sensitive topic but I do think we need to create some sort of path for non-offenders to seek help. Keeping them hidden in the dark isn't beneficial for anyone. Especially potential victims.
